Louis-Aime Japy A pupil of Francois-Louis Francais and J.-B.-Camille Corot, Louis-Aime Japy disdained the family industry to devote himself to landscape painting. He made his debut at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais in 1864 and exhibited there regularly until 1914. He was awarded a medal in 1870, a second-class medal in 1873, and the silver medal at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. He became a member of the Artistes francais in 1883, appeared in a group exhibition at Georges Petit's in Paris in 1888, and was named Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1906. Japy visited Italy at the beginning of his career and brought back several subjects for paintings, but he mainly painted French sites, particularly in the Jura and his native Doubs. He also brought back many landscapes from his travels in Brittany, Picardy and the Oise. He was fond of delicate studies of light and had a quivering touch, without neglecting the precision of the drawing. Considered one of Corot's most gifted students, Louis-Aime Japy knows how to translate nature with great sensitivity. The poetry that emerges from his pastoral scenes is often bathed in a melancholic light. His works are present in many museums.

Louis XVI Dore Bronze Henri Voisin Japy Freres Mantel Clock - French, C. Late 18th - Early 19th century. An extraordinary Dore bronze neoclassical clock with dial signed by Henri Voisin (French, 1733-1815), works by Japy Freres. The Louis XVI style clock is commemorating figureheads of French Royalty. An urn sits adorns the top of the clock case and is decorated with garlands, foliate motifs, and a solitary salamander, the symbol of king Francis I (1494-1547). The clock case bearing goat heads, laurel garlands, and rosettes. At the back of the clock in front of the door to access the works, hangs an medallion portrait of the founder of the Bourbon Dynasty in France, Henri IV (1553-1610). The white enameled dial with both Roman and Arabic numerals is signed: Henri VOISIN, and is covered by a beveled glass door. The works are marked with a Medaille D'Or Brevetes for Japy Freres (c.1819-1835). Dimensions: 21 1/4" h x 9 1/2" w x 8" d. Condition: Some understandable and attractive signs of age. A few chips to enamel on dial.
