PADDY SIMS TJAPALTJARRI (1917-2010) (Language group: Warlpiri) Wama Jukurrpa (Snake Dreaming) 1999 synthetic polymer paint on canvas inscribed verso with artist's name and Warlukurlangu Artists cat. no. 79/99 122 x 61.5cm PROVENANCE: Warlukurlangu Artists, Alice Springs (accompanied by a copy of the certificate of authenticity) Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: © Paddy Japaljarri Sims/Copyright Agency, 2024 The country for this Dreaming contains many secret stories at Kunajarrayi. The snake eventually travelled to Granites (Yaturlu Yaturlu) far to the north. The wavy lines represent the snake and the circlos depict pirdi (snake holes). The snakes go out hunting and retum home each day. The snakes would see the women (Napaljarri and Nungarrayi) coming to hunt with their karlangu (digging sticks) and would hide in the pirdi. Snakes hunt for Liwirringki (burrowing skink), Wardapi (goanna).

PADDY JAPALJARRI SIMS (1917-2010) (Language group: Warlpiri) Yanjirlpirri Jukurrpa - Star Dreaming 2007 synthetic polymer paint on linen 182 x 91cm PROVENANCE: The Artist Warlukurlangu Artists, Northern Territory, cat. no. 2605/07 (accompanied by a copy of the certificate of authenticity) Aboriginal & Pacific Art, Sydney The Le Pley Collection, Western Australia, acquired from the above in 2008 OTHER NOTES: "This painting tells of the journey of Japaljarri and Jungarrayi men who travelled from Kurlurngalinypa (near Lajamanu) to Yanjirlypirri (west of Yuendumu) and then on to Lake Mackay on the West Australian border. Along the way they performed Kurdiji (initiation ceremonies) for young men. Women also danced for the Kurdiji. The site depicted in this canvas is Yanjirlypiri (Star) where there is a low hill and a water soakage. The importance of this place cannot be over emphasised as young boys are brought here to be initiated from as far as Pitjanjatjara country to the south and Laamanu to the north. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukupa, particular sites and other elements. During the performance of this ceremony the men wear Jinjiria (white feather headdresses) on either side of their heads. They also wear wooden carvings of stars which are also laid out on the ground as part of the sand paintings produced for business. Ngalyipi (snake vine) is often depicted as long curved lines, and is used to tie Witi (ceremonial spears) vertically to the shins of the dancing initiates. These Witi are typically shown as long straight lines and the Yanjirlpirri (stars) are usually depicted as white circles or roundels." As stated on the Warlukurlangu Artists certificate of authenticity  © Paddy Japaljarri Sims/Copyright Agency, 2023

Paddy Tjapaltjarri Sims - Yanjirlpiri Jukurrpa (Milky Way Dreaming), 2005

          Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Paddy Sims was born south-west of Yuendumu prior to contact with Europeans. He began painting in the early 1980s when the school principal asked the senior men to paint ancestral designs on the school doors. In all, thirty doors were painted by Paddy Sims, Paddy Stewart, and three other countrymen, and these now hold pride of place in the South Australian Museum. The site depicted is Yanjirliri, which means “star” in Warliri. There are low hills here which are stars coming down to rest on the earth, and a water soakage. The importance of this place can not be overemphasized, as young boys are brought here to be initiated from as far as Pitjantjara country to the south, and Lajamanu to the north. Ngalyipi (snake vine) is used to tie witi (ceremonial spears) vertically to the shins of dancing initiates. These witi are shown in straight lines, stars are two white circles, dancing sites, hills, and soakages are represented by concentric circles.

Paddy Tjapaltjarri Sims - Marla Jukurrpa (Rock Wallaby Dreaming), 2006

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Paddy Japaljarri Sims was born in about 1917 at Kunajarray (Mt Nicker), south-west of Yuendumu at a site where a number of Dreaming tracks interconnect. He began painting in the early 1980s while  passing on his knowledge to many of the young men at the Yuendumu school. In 1989 he travelled to Paris with five other Warlpiri men from Yuendumu to create a ground painting installation at the exhibition ‘Magiciens de la Terre’ at the Centre Georges Pompidou. The painting was received with world-wide acclaim. In this work Paddy painted a Jukurrpa (Dreaming) of marla (rock wallaby) who came from Mowrungu, south-west of Yuendumu, and travelled north past Yinjirrimardi and Chilla Well and moving on north. The marla are represented by the tracks they leave in the sand. Concentric circles show the water holes the marla stopped at, and wavy lines depict the journey they made. From the moment he began painting Paddy Sims’ was revered as one of the greatest of all Warlpiri male artists. His paintings were included in numerous landmark exhibitions.  Amongst them was Dreaming: The Art of Aboriginal Australia, The Asia Society Galleries, New York, 1988; The Continuing Tradition, Australian National Gallery, Canberra, 1989; and Mythscapes: Aboriginal Art of the Desert, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1989.

Paddy Tjapaltjarri Sims (c.1925-2010) Witi Jukurrpa (Ceremonial Poles) - Yanjirlypirri 2006

          Est: $10,000 - $12,000

This painting shows the story of the Witi Jukurrpa (Ceremonial poles). Japaljarri and Jungarrayi men travelled from Kurlurngalinypa (near Lajamanu) to Yanjirlypirri (west of Yuendumu) and then on to Lake Mackay near the West Australian border. On the way they performed Kurdiji (initiation ceremonies) for young men. Women also danced for the Kurdiji ceremony. The site depicted in this canvas is Yanjilypiri where there is a low hill and a water soakage. The importance of this place cannot be overemphasised, as young boys are taken there to be initiated from as far away as Pitjanjatjara country to the south and Lajamanu to the north. The men wear Jinjirla (white feathers headdresses) on either side of their heads. They also wear wooden carvings of stars (Yanjilypiri) which are also laid out on the ground as part of the sand paintings produced for the ceremonies. Their bodies are painted with white and black circles, also representing Yanjilypiri. Ngalyipi (snake vine) is used to tie the Witi poles vertically to the legs of the dancing initiates. The Witi poles are shown as long straight lines and the white circles depict Yanjilypiri. The "U" shapes represent Jungarrayi and Japaljarri men, who, along with their Nungarrayi and Napaljarri classificatory sisters, are the Kirda (custodians) for this Jukurrpa.
