    Est: $900 - $1,100

China, Korea & Japan. Jan Jansson, China Veteribus Sinarum Regio nunc Incolis Tame Dicta, from Atlas Novus, 1646 (circa). Hand Color. Several large lakes dominate the topography of this elegantly engraved map of China. The Great Wall forms the northern boundary of China. The fictitious Chiamay Lacus is shown with numerous rivers flowing south into India and Siam. Korea is depicted as a strangely shaped island separated from the mainland by a narrow strait. Taiwan is located in a roughly correct position, named as both Pakan al I. Formosa, with the additional place names of Gillira, Wankan, and Tayoan. The three main islands of Japan are shown on the Ortelius/Teixeira model. The map is richly embellished with European sailing ships and Chinese sampans, a decorative distance scale, and a title cartouche flanked by a Chinese man and woman. Jansson's map is very similar to Blaeu's map of the same name, with a few differences: the calligraphic Oceanus Chinensis appears in three lines; the ships to the north and south of Japan are sailing towards the east rather than the west; and there are no lines of longitude. Latin text on verso, published between 1646-57. LITERATURE: Caboara #24; Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #8410:1B.

  • MAP, Mexico, Jansson

    MAP, Mexico, Jansson

    Est: $180 - $210

Western Mexico. Jan Jansson, Nova Hispania, et Nova Galicia, from Novus Atlas, 1646 (circa). Hand Color. This decorative map of the central and western coastal regions of Mexico is based on Ortelius. Mexico City is situated on a large lake below the elaborate title cartouche featuring the Royal Spanish Arms. Several gold and silver mines are located in the central region. A galleon and sea monster ornament the Pacific and armadillos walk across the cartouche containing a key locating several sites around Mexico City. This is a superlative example of Dutch cartography and a great example of the similarity between the work of Jansson and Blaeu. Here Jansson's plate features a ship and sea monster with calligraphy in the Pacific, whereas Blaeu's map lacks the calligraphy and embellished the area with two ships and a compass rose. Latin text on verso, published between 1646-57. LITERATURE: Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #9510:1.2.

  • MAP, North Pole, Jansson

    MAP, North Pole, Jansson

    Est: $750 - $900

North Pole. Jan Jansson, Nova et Accurata Poli Arctici et Terrarum Circum Iacentium Descriptio, from Nieuwen Atlas, 1657 (published). Hand Color. This beautiful map, originally published in 1637, eventually replaced Hondius' map of the North Pole and became the prototype for many later maps including those of Blaeu. This map incorporates the discoveries made by Captain Thomas James along the southern and western shores of Hudson Bay in 1631-2. The delineation on Russia's Arctic coast is derived from the information from Willem Barents' exploration of 1596-7. A small island off the coast of Lapland is named for the English explorer Hugh Willoughby ( Sr. Hugo Willoughby's Landt), who led a failed expedition to find a Northeast Passage in 1553. Rhumb lines radiate from the North Pole, and several compass roses embellish the chart. A large title cartouche, with two figures and numerous wind heads, conveniently hides the northwest coast of America. The map is further decorated with ships and a cartouche with Jansson’s imprint, which depicts men in parkas, a polar bear, and foxes. This is the second state of the map with a legend beneath the cartouche. Dutch text on verso. LITERATURE: Burden #250; Kershaw #105e; Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #0020:1C.

Jan Jansson (1588-1664) Dutch, Terra Firma et Novum Regnum Granatense et Popayan Atlas Print

    Est: $150 - $300

Jan Jansson (1588-1664) Dutch, Terra Firma et Novum Regnum Granatense et Popayan Atlas Print. Reproduction of the 1658 map depicting Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama originally created by Guiljelmus Blaeuw, compiled in the 10th Volume of the Atlas Major.  Overall Size: 20 5/8 x 25 in.  Sight Size: 14 1/2 x 19 in.  #5022 .  Jan Jansson (also known as Johannes Janssonius) was born Jan Janszoon in 1588 in Arnhem, in the Netherlands. His father was a publisher and bookseller, and he studied early to follow in his footsteps. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of the skilled engraver and cartographer Jodocus Hondius who taught Jan how to study and compile maps. His first maps were produced in 1616, of France and Italy. In 1623 he purchased a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, at which time he adopted the Johannes moniker. By 1627 when his wife passed away from the plague he had acquired additional stores in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Geneva, and Lyon. While traveling to inspect one of his stores in 1629 he met and fell in love with Elisabeth Carlier, and that same year he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius and began publishing atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. In 1638 he renamed the Hondius Atlas as Atlas Novus and expanded it into three immense volumes, one dedicated entirely to all the different towns and regions of Italy. In 1646 a fourth volume was produced that showed English county maps, which bore many similarities to those of his main rival, Joan Blaeu. These became the most popular atlases in England, which led to the simplified name Jan he is best known by. By 1660 most of his atlases had also been translated into English and the completed set was called “Atlas Major,” with 11 volumes in total containing the work of nearly one hundred credited authors and engravers. It became the best-selling item in Europe for a brief period, with editions printed in Latin, French, and German. After Jan’s death in 1664, his son-in-law Johannes van Waesbergen continued to run the company the rest of his life. The scope of the Atlas Major was unparalleled for the rest of the 17th Century, even bankrupting some publishers like Moses Pitt who attempted to publish the entire compilation in their own languages and editions.

This superb folio map is very unusual because it is based on Jansson's small map (Iaponia et Terra Eso) from his Atlas Minor, rather than the other way around. It presents Japan on the model initiated by Dudley and then refined by Jansson with information from previously unpublished Dutch sources. The important Dutch discoveries of Marten De Vries relating to Ezo and the Kurils are shown as a huge Landt van Eso, Staten Eylant, and Compagnies Land, misrepresentations that would appear on maps of the region for the next 150 years. Korea is shown as a large island with a single place name, Tauxem, at the approximate location of modern P'yongyang. Four sailing ships and a sea monster fill the waters. Blank verso, published between 1658-80. LITERATURE: Hubbard #30; Walter #57 & OAG-30; Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #8450:1B.

Jansson's Splendid Heptarchy Map. Britain. Jan Jansson, Britannia Prout Divisa suit Temporibus Anglo-Saxonum, Praesertim Durante Illorum Heptarchia, 1684 (circa). Hand Color. Elaborate vignettes depicting kings and scenes from Saxon history flank this magnificent map of Britain. The scenes are identical in subject matter to those used by John Speed. However they are presented in the dramatic, Dutch miniature style. The left border contains portraits of the earliest kings, while the right one depicts later kings in the process of conversion to Christianity. Included is a scene of Ethelbert receiving instruction from Saint Augustine and another of Sebert re-consecrating the temples of Diana and Apollo, now St. Paul's, London and St. Peters, Westminster. The map shows England, Scotland and Wales divided into the various Saxon kingdoms, each decorated with its coat-of-arms. A superb example of Dutch cartographic design and engraving. Jansson copied Blaeu's map of the same title, adding several additional decorative elements - compass roses with radiating rhumb lines, three sailing ships, and an escutcheon in Ireland. (Engraving - Title Pages) [Untitled - Atlas Novus]

    Est: $180 - $210

Title Pages. Jan Jansson, [Untitled - Atlas Novus], 1650 (circa). Hand Color. This lovely title page was issued in the second volume of Jansson's Atlas Novus, containing maps of France, Switzerland, and Spain. The title page was originally issued in 1642 with French King Louis XIII and Queen Anne, but the editions published from 1644 onward replaced those figures with a knight and a queen with the Merovingian coat of arms. The present example was issued circa 1650 with the date removed from the publisher's imprint. On this example, the title is blank; it was common practice for the decorative engraving to be printed without the atlas title, which was then adhered at the time of publication.

    Est: $140 - $170

Title Pages. Jan Jansson, [Novus Atlas Volume V], 1657 (published). Black & White. Flanking the title are two Roman figures in armor with Roman Emperor Ferdinand III directly beneath the title. In the bottom corners of the sheet are naval scenes with groups of navigators plotting their routes. The symbolism in the lower portion of the page reflects the contents of the work, which included both a sea atlas and a historical atlas of Greece. It was common practice for the decorative engraving to be printed without the atlas title, which was adhered at the time of publication - in this case, the title is blank with only the publisher's imprint is adhered to the sheet.
