Artist: Laurenz Janscha (1749-1812) Execution: Johann Ziegler (1749-1802) Publisher: Artaria Hand-colored outline etching Austria, 1785 This rare hand-colored outline etching originates from a series of five large sheets published by Artaria in 1785 after vedute by Laurenz Janscha (1749-1812). Originally titled ‘Ruin of Carthage’, this roman ruin lies at the bottom of the tree-covered Schönbrunnerberg. This structure was designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and built in 1778. Hohenberg created the roman ruin in Schönbrunn after the ancient Temple of Vespasian and Titus in Rome, its ruins could be seen in an engraving by Giovanni Battista Piranesi from around 1756. Laurenz Janscha (also Lorenz Jantscha oder Lovro Janša), the son of a Matthias Janscha (1683–1752), a farmer, and Lucia Debellak (1705–1781), was accepted at the engraving academy in Vienna around 1770, where he received his training in landscape painting. Franz Edmund Weirotter was also one of his teachers. From 1780 Janscha also worked on etchings. In 1785 he contributed watercolor templates for seven sheets, predominantly landscapes, for the Collection de 50 vues de la ville de Vienne by the Viennese publisher Artaria. Subsequently, the artist focused on producing vedute and scenes from around Vienna and other places, which were published by different Viennese publishers. In 1803 he painted a large panorama of Vienna which was displayed in a show booth in the Prater and in other cities. In 1797 Janscher became assistant professor for landscape painting at the academy in Vienna, after the death of Carl Philipp Schalhas. In 1806 he was appointed head of the master school and in 1811 he became a professor. This view of Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary) in around 1800 is by landscape painter and engraver Laurenz Janscha, a former student of Franz Edmund Weirotter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1806 he himself started to teach landscape drawing at the Academy. He primarily created landscapes of the area around Vienna and other areas in the Austrian monarchy. He rarely painted with oils, and the primary focus of his work was on watercolor vedute. He created the Panorama of Vienna; Janscha's works have often been used as the basis for prints by other artists, including Karel Postl and Johann Ziegler. Janscha also occasionally created prints and etchings.

Titre gravé au trait par Junker et tiré en noir, un feuillet de table imprimée, 43 vues (sur 50) gravées au trait par Ziegler d'après les dessins de Janscha, finement coloriées et aquarellées à l'époque, chaque planche (sauf une) avec son feuillet de texte explicatif. (Manque les planches 4a, 1, 2, 6, 12, 14 et 23; sans le feuillet de texte pour la pl. 24; planche 26 avec grande déchirure sans manque mais touchant l'image anciennement restaurée, planche 3 arrachée avec déchirure atteignant la bordure, planches 36 et 45 avec déchirures hors de l'image, texte et planche 46 volants et plus courts de marges.) Demi-maroquin fauve à coins de l'époque, dos lisse orné avec pièce de titre (éraflures et usures). MAGNIFIQUE SUITE DE VUES DU RHIN avec son texte bilingue en français et en allemand. C'est la suite la plus prestigieuse jamais réalisée sur le Rhin de la période romantique. Les très belles et grandes vues représentent entre autres les villes de Mayence, Worms, Cologne et Düsseldorf. Dans l'exemplaire présent la numérotation des planches 34 à 36 a été rectifiée à la main ce qui indiquerait un premier tirage. Les exemplaires complets des planches avec le texte sont très rares; le dernier vendu dans nos salles à Londres lors de la vente Foyle en 2001 ne contenait pas les feuillets de texte et comportait les planches 34 à 36 avec les numéros corrigés dans la plaque.
