Jean François Janinet (French 1752-1814), After Jean-Baptiste André Gautier D'Agoty (French 1740-1786) Marie Antoinette D'Austriche Hand-colored etching and engraving with gilt highlights, 1777; apparently in good condition. Framed in a fleur-de-lis bordered gilt frame.* Provenance: Goupil & Companie, Paris Note: This image of Marie Antoinette is after the highly successful portrait of the Queen by Gautier-d'Agoty, likely painted to mark the occasion of her marriage to King Louis XVI. Gautier-D'agoty's younger brother, Louis, reproduced the painting in a poorly received mezzotint which likely caused him to involve Janinet in a second reproduction. Regarded as a highly skilled printer, Janinet used four separate color plates eliminating the need for hand-coloring and creating the illusion of a pastel drawing. Impressions of this print are rare, possibly because the illegal use of gold in the frame prompted the authorities to stop production.

Ansichten von Pariser Bauwerken und Sehenswürdigkeiten. 149 Aquatinta-Farbradierungen nach Jean-Nicolas-Louis-Durand u.a., 18 Darstellungen auf die Albumseiten gedruckt, sonst bis auf 2 Drucke paarweise montiert, sämtlich gebunden in marmoriertem HLeder d. Z. (beschabt, Kanten stärker bestoßen, Deckel lose). Quer-4to. Ca. 1787-1793 (?). IFF (Janinet), aus 176 und 183, Cohen/Ricci, aus 514, 515 und 516. Wz. Wappen mit Posthorn, Nebenmarke Buchstaben LVG (Albumseiten). Sammleralbum mit farbigen Ansichten der Bauwerke und Sehenswürdigkeiten von Paris aus drei verschiedenen Folgen, die zusammen ein wahrhaftes Pantheon auf Papier der städtischen Architektur im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert darstellen. 18 Blatt stammen aus einem ca. 1787 "chez Esnault et Rapilly" erschienenem Recueil "Vues des plus beaux Édifices Publics et Particuliers de la ville de Paris" mit großen ovalen und rechteckigen Darstellungen von Janinet nach Durand. Es blieb unvollendet und zählte rund 42 Darstellungen (IFF 176). Die anderen 131 Veduten in kleinen Medaillons (D. ca. 10-12,5 cm) stammen aus zwei verschiedenen Folgen, herausgegeben ca. 1789-92 unter dem gleichlautenden Titel "Vues pittoresques des principaux édifices de Paris", jedoch mit unterschiedlichen Ansichten. Vorhanden sind aus der "chez Esnault et Rapilly" herausgegebenen Folge 48 (von 73) Veduten von Janinet nach Durand, aus der Folge "chez les Campions" 83 (von 110) Ansichten inkl. Titel von Bellet, Le Campion, Guyot, Roger nach Vorlagen von Durand, Sergent und Testard. Ansichten derselben Bauwerke aus den beiden Folgen vielfach nebeneinander moniert. - Ganz ausgezeichnete, differenzierte Drucke, die montierten Blätter meist mit feinem Rändchen. Minimal gebräunt, stockfleckig und fleckig, Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren vor allem entlang der Kanten der Albumblätter, die leeren Seiten knickfaltig, sonst vor allem die Darstellungen in schöner und originaler Erhaltung. Berard (bookplate) FIRST EDITION of this collection of scenes of Louis XVI's Paris, printed in colors using Janinet's aquatint process and employing the engravers of the Campion Freres workshop. It was later expanded to 99 and then 110 scenes. The plates here are numbered 1 to 80, with two versions of plate 71 bound facing each other. Rare in this edition.
