      OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - MAN IN A BLACK HAT

      Est: -

The Man in the Black Hat is one of Janeček's starting points for shape reduction influenced by abstraction and cubism. Ota Janeček was a full-time artist, his work was based on the domestic tradition and the legacy of European modernism. From the initial impulses of cubism, lyrical figuralism or French colourism, he turned his attention to his own unmistakable expression. Works by Ota Janeček can be found in the National Gallery in Prague, the Tate Gallery in London, the National Library in Paris, the MC Nay Institute in San Antonio, USA, the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts in Japan and the National Gallery of Wales. Technique: oil on hardboard, Signed: sign. lower right and verso: Ota Janeček

      OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - HEAD OF A MAN

      Est: -

Ota Janeček was one of the prolific and very rigorous authors who almost scientifically progressed to the optimal abstraction of shapes. The head of a man is one of his frequently treated themes, to which he returned repeatedly, each time trying to imprint something of his personal artistic poetry on it. While the earlier Head subjects from the 1960s are composed of a rather more reserved and earthy palette, the presented Head of a Man is much wilder and the facial expression reveals introspection and inner conflict. Technique: oil on hardboard, Signed: sign. lower right and verso: Ota Janeček 90

      OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - WINTER

      Est: -

Despite all the distinctiveness of Ota Janeček's creative character, his work can be associated with Czech artists such as Jiří Trnka for his poetic landscape sensibility, Zdeněk Seydl or František Tichy. However, we can also find a connection to older artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Especially the winter motifs of this representative of 16th century Dutch painting attracted him with the melancholic lyricism of bare trees, whose rich branches stand out strikingly in their brown against the white background of the snowy landscape. The imaginative charge, executed with draughtsmanship, is often based on the intermingling of reality and dream, of precise natural detail with the cosmic whole of the earthly world in the evocative unity between man and the natural world that Janeček's illustrations exude. The work on offer, Winter, is part of a set of illustrations for a songbook for kindergartens published in 1986. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: watercolour, pastel, paper

      OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - AUTUMN

The field of illustration represents a very characteristic position in Janeček's work, where the ability of pictorial personification remains the main strength of the artist's imagination. In the context of children's literature, the principle of giving things or animals, especially birds, a human character or way of acting corresponds to the potential of children's imagination and gives it a precise direction. The imaginative charge, executed with drawing skill, is often based on the intermingling of reality and dream, of precise natural detail with the cosmic whole of the earthly world in the evocative unity between man and the natural world that Janeček's illustrations exude. Jun. 06, 2024

      OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - STANDING FIGURE

      Est: -

The relief by the prominent Czech painter and sculptor Ota Janeček depicts a standing figure made using the assemblage technique from wooden parts, supplemented with local painting. The work belongs to a small group of the artist's mostly metal sculptures from the late 1960s, which he created in his studio outside of Prague. The work corresponds in meaning and appearance to the broader body of Janeček's work, which at the time represented a shift from the Ecce Homo series (Behold, a Man!) to the situation after 1968 with the tragic metaphor of the man-as-target (Jan Palach). Here Janeček explores the relationship of individualised form, distinctly felt in plasticity, to surface. In this way, the relief follows on from his paintings created at this time, which revolve around the question "what is the world made of?". The relief on offer comes from the artist's estate. OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - THE GIRL IS SMARTER

      Est: -

Opus No. 702 - The girl is smarter is a humorous example of the author's unrestrained creative imagination. Undoubtedly, the child's mind was a great inspiration to him, as its acumen and ability to solve different situations often surpasses that of adults. A playful child's mind, focusing its full attention on a task, will often come up with a simple solution as quickly as a state-of-the-art computer. OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - NUDE

      Est: -

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ota Janeček's work is dominated by a dreamy and fragile line. When it came to drawings of girls or female nudes, they permeate Ota Janeček's work continuously and represent a time-lapse document of his approaches. At first, he was based on Amedeo Modigliani, but through gradual chiselling, he reached his own intimate position of the drawing, which is above all intensely felt and completely brilliantly, even calligraphically, mastered in an ingenious shorthand. Technique: charcoal, paper, Signed: sign. lower left: Janeček 71

      OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - THISTLE

      Est: -

The scenery of the thistle silhouette illuminated by the setting sun, into which the reign of silence and eternal peace has entered, belongs to the easily recognizable repertoire of Ota Janeček. A harmonious effect is achieved here by the composition of spatial plans with a highly contoured contour in the foreground and a solar gradient in the background. He only lets living and inanimate nature speak to us visually. All of Janeček's free and applied creation of poetic expression with an important role of color is thematically focused on nature and its detail. Ota Janeček's works can be found in NG in Prague, Tate Gallery and other collections around the world. Technique: indian ink, watercolour, paper, Signed: sign. lower left: Ota Janeček 1956

OTA JANEČEK 1919 - 1996 - LULLABY WITH ROSES AND TULIP

      Est: -

The charm of Ota Janeček's works lies in his ability to create a visual poem. A bird dozing on a stone in the setting sun, a blue tulip emerges in muted colors. The calm and relaxed composition is an ideal counterpart to Jan Skácel's lullabies in verse, a work that has a lot in common ideologically with Ota Janeček - love for nature, love for people and things, safety, peace in the landscape, certainty. Technique: watercolour, pastel, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: Ota Janeček
