The ironclad ram-bowed Hotspur was constructed in 1868 to match the French vessels of the same class. Completed in November 1871 by Govan Napier, she displaced 4331 tons and measured 235 x 50 x 10ft. Similar in design to Glatton, although with an additional unarmoured hull structure above the belt, and a fixed armoured gun house with four gun ports instead of a turret. Hotspur was considered too slow and lacking in fire power to be really useful and was relegated to coastal defence. Reconstructed between 1881 and 1883 at Lairds, Hotspur was given a new gun house, a full width box citadel along with steam-assisted steering and torpedo launching gear. Hotspur was sold and broken up in 1904
