      FAYAD JAMIS (Mexico, 1930 - Havana, 1988). "Correos cubanos", 1988. Mixed media and collage on paper Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Sizes: 69 x 48 cm; 82.5 x 62 cm (frame). Within the generation of the 1950s, the voice of Fayad Jamis stands out for his humanist political commitment approached from a variety of disciplines, as well as for the union of surrealist images and colloquialism. In fact, the surrealist master Andre Breton was one of the voices that supported Jamis and even financed his first solo exhibition in Paris. Although he is known for his volcanic abstract paintings, it is also worth mentioning his facet as a portraitist in which his surrealist side is most visible. He was a Cuban poet, painter, designer, journalist and translator. After moving to Cuba at the age of six, Jamís studied at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts before gaining renown as an abstract painter. He was a member of the modernist group of Cuban painters known as "Las Once". Jamís lived in Paris in the 1950s, and studied at the Sorbonne. The surrealist writer André Breton was a supporter of his work and coexhibited with the sculptor Agustín Cárdenas. Jamís returned to Cuba in 1959 and became involved in a wide range of activities including teaching, painting and writing. He served as a cultural attaché at the Cuban embassy in Mexico for more than a decade. Jamís received the Casa de las Américas prize for his book Por Esta Libertad (For This Freedom). His paintings can be seen in collections in Cuba and abroad. He often used pseudonyms such as Fernando Moro, Onirio Estrada or used the initials F.J.N.
