Will James "Lone Cowboy" & "Cow Country" Books

Featured in this lot are two Will James books titled, "Lone Cowboy" (1930) and "Cow Country" (1927). William Roderick James (1892-1942) was a Canadian-American artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing "Smoky the Cowhorse", for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal, and numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed "in the tradition of Charles Russell", and much of it was used to illustrate his books. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. "Lone Cowboy" details the life and adventures of Will James' life as a cowboy. The piece contains 35 black and white illustrations throughout the book. The green cloth gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover displays the image of a cowboy astride a horse, lasso in hand. "Cow Country" is a collection of eight stories, from wild mustangs and ornery steers to lonesome drifters and fancy dudes, which bring to life the weather-hardened cowboys who worked and lived on the range. Each story features Will James' pen-and-ink and charcoal drawings. The tan cloth bound gold gilt illustrated stamped hardcover displays the image of a steer skull on the front cover, a lariat and rifle image on the spine. Original illustrated paper dust jacket exhibits tears and scuffing. Both books are in good overall condition, intact pages exhibit age tanning. First book measures 5.75"W x 8.375"L x 1.5"D. Second book is 5.5"W x 8.25"L x .75"D. Collective weight is 2lb, 8oz.

Included in this lot is a First Edition of Scorpion a Good Bad Horse by Will James 1936, publisher Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, London. Will James (1892 - 1942) was a French Canadian artist and writer of the American West. The second book titled, "Young Cowboy" tells the story of a young cowboy named Billy. Billy, who received his first horse, Big-Enough, for his fourth birthday, spends the next several years working hard to become a good, all-around cowboy on his father's ranch. This book is bound in a muted yellow cloth hardcover and shows a young boy riding a bucking bronco. Below the image it reads, "Young Cowboy Will James" in black lettering. The books show good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of obvious damage. "Uncle Bill" measures 8 1/2" L x 5 7/8" W x 3/4" D, while "Young Cowboy" measures 7 1/4" L x 9 1/4" W x 5/8" D. They have a collective weight of 1 pound and 10 ounces.

This is an original hand engraved copper etching plate signed by Will James (1892-1942), from circa 1920-1930s. This hand signed original work of art is done on a display plate, full signed etching plates from Will James are exceedingly rare. Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault, also known as Will James, was born on June 6, 1892, in Quebec, Canada, and was recognized for his writing and accurate pencil drawings. He left Canada at an early age and moved to the United States, where he worked and drifted as a cowboy. He served in the army and quickly began selling his sketches. He married in 1920 and then briefly attended Yale University. His writing career began when he sent an essay with drawings to Scribner's New York offices. His easygoing, casual approach, combined with drawings, appealed to editor Maxwell Perkins. Will James spent his latter years at his home in Billings, Montana, and on his ranch, the "Rocking R Ranch", at Pryor Creek, Montana. He passed away at the age of 50 in 1942. This copper plate shows Will James etching set in the center showing a cowboy riding a bucking bronco. He holds his hat in one hand and holds the ropes with his other hand as the horse flies through the air. The horse and rider show great attention to detail and remarkable etching skills, resulting in a clean and easy to see etching. Below the etching is the artist's signature reading, "Will James". The plate shows good condition overall with some slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is noted. It has developed a nice, light patina throughout. The plate measures 15 3/4" in diameter and weighs 3 pounds and 2 ounces.

They had an extensive collection of fine art and incorporated it into their daily living between Bigfork Montana and Carefree Arizona. WILL JAMES PENCIL DRAWING BOOK ILLUSTRATED

21 1/2" by 29" framed. Illustrated in the book In the Saddle with Uncle Bill by Will James. Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault, later to be known as Will James, was born on June 6, 1892, in Quebec, Canada. Known for both his writing and his precise pencil drawings, Will's drawing experiences began on his mother's kitchen floor. At a young age, he departed Canada and traveled to the United States, working and drifting primarily as a cowboy. He served in the army and soon began selling his sketches. In 1920 he married, and shortly after that, he had a brief period of study at Yale University, but that enrollment was short lived because he felt closed in by the environment and missed his wife Alice. During that time, he painted the occasional still life, which was atypical of him. His writing career began when he sent in an essay, accompanied with illustrations, to the New York offices of Scribner's. His easy-going and casual style, with drawings, provided a combination that editor Maxwell Perkins liked. (Perkins also worked with Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and other notables) James' pencil drawings were precise and depicted his own experiences as a cowboy. His first novel, Smoky, was introduced in 1926 and won the Newberry medal for literature from the American Library Association. He also produced an oil by the same name, again his most famous and recognized work. Two years later his first writing of Bucking Horse Riders was sold, and since then has never been out of print. His last book, "The American Cowboy" was written in 1942. He wrote and illustrated 23 books in all, with appeal to a wide audience. His art appeared in the pages of books and periodicals, as well as illustrating the works of other authors. Will James spent his latter years at his home in Billings, Montana, and on his ranch, the "Rocking R Ranch", at Pryor Creek, Montana. During his lifetime, he was fortunate to watch his popularity grow, as he witnessed movies made from his books. Despite his popularity and success as a novelist and artist, James had a tragic life. He served a short prison term for rustling, experienced an unpleasant marriage, and had a severe alcohol dependency. His life ended at an early age of 50 in 1942.

Included in this lot is a first edition 'Cowboy in the Making' by Will James. Will James (June 6, 1892 - September 3, 1942) was a French Canadian artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing Smoky the Cowhorse, for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal, and numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed "in the tradition of Charles Russell", and much of it was used to illustrate his books. This book is about a young orphan boy who finds companionship with his horses and an old trapper as they travel together through the Rocky Mountains of the Old West. This book is in good condition, showing some liquid damage to cover of the book. The book measures 9 1/2" x 7 1/4" x 3/4".

This is the saga of the American cowboy. The book is illustrated by the author and shows an orange-reddish cloth cover with blue lettering for the title and the authors signature. The condition of this book is good, with no obvious signs of damage and some wear and browning to the pages consistent with the age of the book. The measurements of this book are 8 1/2" x 6".

This is an original work of art pen and ink drawing by Will James showing a western Cowboy attempting to lasso a bicycle done in circa 1924. The artwork is done on paper and shows a quadriptych (four part) cartoonist like design showing first a cowboy on horse back coming upon a rider-less bicycle; second attempting to lasso the speeding off bike; third the horse rearing up as the bike has been roped; and fourth and lastly the cowboy sits defeated on the ground next to his horse watching a puff of smoke as the rider-less bike speeds off into the distance. The back of the drawing shows a ledger of Will James year of 1924 and his expected incomes from various book illustrations and advanced royalties for one of his books coming out to $2,830. This piece was part of the original 2001 Snook Estate Auction and was mentioned as being part of the sale by the Billings Gazette. Will James was a close friend of the Snook Family and was known to be a constant visitor to their Billings, Montana Ranch along with Charles M. Russell. The artwork measures 10 7/8 by 8 3/8.
