J.E.B. Stuart War-Dated ALS: "I have but one motive...and that is duty to our country"

        Est: $4,500 - $6,000

James E.B. Stuart Richmond, VA, March 2, 1863 J.E.B. Stuart War-Dated ALS: "I have but one motive...and that is duty to our country" ALS James Ewell Brown Stuart (1833-1864). Autograph Letter Signed, "J.E.B. Stuart / Major Genl", 2pp on lightly lined bifold stationery measuring 5" x 8", Head Quarters Cavalry Division, Army of Northern Virginia, March 2, 1863. Expected folds. Minor toning. Light ink show through. In fine condition. In full: "Your favor of July 24th was duly rec'd and I have given its subject prompt attention, but no record can be found of any such case having been submitted here. It must have miscarried. My Division surgeon to whom I showed your letter says he will make inquiry about your son and if worthy will have him detailed for hospital duty at the Coleman Institute in Hanover, where his opportunities for study will be better & his expenses less than at Richmond. In the abstract I am opposed to such details but there are special cases which justify it. I have but one motive in these matters and that is duty to our country, which I know you will recognise as paramount to everything else." Jeb Stuart was a Confederate army general and cavalry officer during the American Civil War. He was a cavalry commander known for his mastery of reconnaissance and the use of cavalry in support of offensive operations. While he cultivated a cavalier image, his serious work made him the trusted eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee's army and inspired Southern morale. At the time that Stuart penned this letter, the Army of Northern Virginia still had the Union Army well under control. Even though they were often outnumbered, the southern forces always seemed to emerge victorious. This is not to say that they had not been well-bloodied by their major contests with the Army of the Potomac, but what existed was a feeling of near-invincibility. This is not surprising, as men like Lee, James Longstreet, Stonewall Jackson and Stuart had regularly done amazing things by repelling the enemy with far less of the raw materials of war at their disposal. The downward turn of the Confederacy's fortunes seemed to begin with the loss of Jackson, just three months after this letter was written. To Lee, this loss was a huge blow. Things would become worse still for lee and his men just two months later with the South's defeat at their high water mark, the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. On May 11th of the following year, Lee would lose the man that he called the eyes of his army, for Stuart would receive a mortal wound at the Battle of Yellow Tavern. With his fall, the light of the Confederate cause dimmed perceptibly. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Stuart, James Ewell Brown ("Jeb") Manuscript letter signed ("J.E.B. Stuart") as CSA general, to Governor Zebulon B. Vance of North Carolina, discussing a fraudulent release of a prisoner 1 1/4 pages (252 x 197 mm) on a sheet of Head Quarters Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia letterhead, 5 December 1863, docketed on second page. Stuart responds to a letter from Governor Vance's aide-de-camp, who had inquired too late about the propriety of releasing a prisoner on Stuart's authority: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a letter of the 30th ultimo from your A.D.C. in reference to one Capt. Chas. H. Hord, 1st S.C. Cavalry who presented himself to you with orders purporting to be from me for the delivery to him on one John Minsey, then in jail in Charlotte, N.C. charged with murder, in faith of which authority you caused the delivery to be made. "I have no knowledge of any such person as Capt. Chas. H. Hord. Such a name does not appear upon the roster of the 1st S.C. Cavalry, nor is there any record of any such authority, having, emanated from me, The case is entirely new to me. "I have referred your letter to Col. [John L.] Black, 1st S.C. Cavalry for any information he may be able to give upon this subject. There is every reason to believe Hord is an imposter & has been guilty of fraud against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of N.C. and of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in the Armies of the Confederate States."

      • Stuart, James Ewell Brown ("Jeb") | "Before another week we expect to win another glorious victory. Hurrah! Hurrah!!"
        Jul. 20, 2023

Stuart, James Ewell Brown ("Jeb") | "Before another week we expect to win another glorious victory. Hurrah! Hurrah!!"

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Property of a New York Collector Stuart, James Ewell Brown ("Jeb") Autograph letter signed with initial ("S") as CSA general, to Laura Ratcliffe, providing enthusiastic battle reports, including a precipitate account of Shiloh 2 1/2 pages (153 x 97 mm) on a bifolium of machine-laid paper (watermarked Joynson | 1856), Rappahanock, 8 April 1862, with original autograph envelope (with printed address "Head Quarters Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Potomac") addressed to Miss Ratcliffe at "Beauty's Bower"; envelope worn and stained. An exuberant letter, with romantic overtones, from Stuart to a Confederate woman spy: "Before another week we expect to win another glorious victory. Hurrah! Hurrah!!" Laura Ratcliffe lived in Fairfax, Virginia, and her home was sometimes used as a headquarters by the ranger John Singleton Mosby. Ratcliffe used to hide messages and money for Mosby, and once hid him from a search party of Federal troops. Among other Confederate officers to whom she offered various types of support was J. E. B. Stuart, who corresponded with her and occasionally even sent her poetry. The present letter recounts a recent series of Confederate victories—including a premature claim regarding the battle of Shiloh—and anticipates others, perhaps even an invasion of Pennsylvania. "We are here quietly waiting for the yankees and if they ever come we will send them howling through Fairfax again. We have won a glorious victory in New Mexico, capturing the whole Federal command 5000, under Genl. Canby. We have also won a glorious victory near Corinth on the Tenn. Captured 3 Genls. Smith, McClernand & Prentiss, & six thousand prisoners, all their artillery & camp equipage & rumor says we are here to bag the remainder who are in full retreat. A. S. Johnston was killed. Beauregard & Bragg were there." The closing of the letter turns rather more personal, but still maintains the tone of martial enthusiasm: "I have thought of you much, & hope soon to see you all again. Before another week we expect to win another glorious victory. Hurrah! Hurrah!! I wish I could see you read this. My regards to your folks. The bullet-proof is all right." Stuart's report on Shiloh, the battle "near Corinth on the Tenn.," was too hasty. The first day's fighting, 6 April, did favor the rebels, but after General Johnston's death a Union counterattack reversed fortunes the next day. General Benjamin Prentiss did indeed surrender his division during the battle (for which he was sharply criticized by U. S. Grant in his Memoirs), but General Charles F. Smith did not participate in the battle, being laid up by an infection that would kill him before the end of the month. General John A. McClernand was not only not captured, he played a significant role in the counteroffensive formulated by Grant. By 8 April, the date of Stuart's letter, it was the Union Army that was in pursuit of retreating Confederates. The envelope for the letter bears the engraved address of "Head Quarters Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Potomac." The Confederate Army of the Potomac was commanded by P. G. T. Beauregard, but in mid-March 1862 it was renamed as the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. PROVENANCE: Christie's New York, 16 December 2004, lot 369 [part] ("The Property of a Southern Gentleman")
