[Civil War]. James A. Garfield Autograph Letter Signed ("J.A. Garfield").  One page of a bifolium, 5" x 8", Washington; December 14, 1863. Letter addressed to author and editor Charles Lanman requesting he includes a line about Garfield's commendation for service at the Battle of Chickamauga in his Dictionary of Congress. He writes, in full: " In getting out your Dictionary of Congress, you asked me for a Biographical sketch, some months ago, which I furnished. Since that time I was appointed Major General of Vols. which in the language of the letter of appointment was ‘for Gallant and meritorious Service in the battle of Chicamauga [ sic] Geo. to take date from Sept. 19, 1863."  At the Battle of Chickamauga, the future president made a dangerous ride to the front to aide General George Thomas, who was bravely attempting to hold the line as Rosecrans's ordered a retreat back to Chattanooga. Garfield made the decision on his own initiative and was one of the few generals to do so. The ride became famous and earned the Ohioan native personal acclaim and a promotion to major general. Garfield subsequently left the army to serve in Congress as an Ohio representative in December 1863. The letter is accompanied by an engraved vignette portrait of Garfield by J. R. Rice. Condition: Small area of paper attachment to verso (page [4]), presumably indicating prior mounting. HID01801242017
