John Wells James (1873 - 1951) Oil on board, Signed Lower Left, Measures (9 x 12 inches) w/frame (13 x 16 inches) Painter John Wells James, Jr., lived a double life as businessman and artist. Along with his three brothers, he was a co-founder of the Brooklyn (NY) wholesale drug company, Towns & James, serving for many years as its president. As a painter, James was associated with the New Hope School of American Impressionists. He studied painting with James Knox and was a member of the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America, the Brooklyn Painters Society, the Rockport Artists Society, and the American Federation of Artists. James ultimately settled in the Bucks County, Pennsylvania community of Solebury, where he regularly contributed works to the Phillips Mill exhibitions. Mostly remembered for his tightly constructed impressionist landscapes of picturesque scenes along the Delaware River, he also created a substantial number of floral still-lives.

(40 x 50.5cm) Provenance Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Frame: 20 3/4 x 25 x 1 1/4 in. In overall good to very good condition. With a small loss in the board 'and consequently the canvas) at upper right corner. Similar issue at bottom left corner (from the verso, it looks as if the canvas itself is no longer adhering to the board). We notice a small pinpoint hole in the thread of the canvas at upper center right in the sky. A twin Examination under UV light does not reveal any sign of inpainting.

There is no evidence of restoration when examined under UV light. Frame: 18 3/8 x 21 3/8 x 1 1/2 in.
