We all have our own conceptions, of course. Personally, I don't particularly enjoy life. I'm not worried if I drop dead tomorrow. Because every day that I am living and working I'm doing exactly what I want. I fulfill myself each day within my work and with the thoughts of what's next."- Ann James - Born in Hove, Sussex, England, in 1925, Ann James studied art at the Brighton School of Art in the 1940's. She moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1946, returning to her art studies in the 1960's at the University of Saskatchewan's Regina Campus, under Arthur McKay, Kenneth Lochhead, Jack Sures, and Ricardo Gómez. James also attended workshops at Emma Lake from 1965 to 1968, studying with Lawrence Alloway, John Cage, Harold Cohen, Frank Stella, and Donald Judd.In 1968, James established the Hone-James Studio in Regina with her partner Jan Hone, where they held workshops and lectures in art. James eventually took over full ownership of the studio in 1973. James returned to live in London, England, in 1976. She taught workshops and led lectures and demonstrations in both Canada and the U.K, including ceramics and sculpture courses at the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Throughout her career, James exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, and her works are included in prominent international collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Imperial Palace in Tokyo and the Canada Council Art Bank in Ottawa. She was also the recipient of a University of Saskatchewan Travel Grant and several Canada Council grants and bursaries. James passed away in London in 2011.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsArt Gallery of Greater Victoria, BCBurlington Arts Center, ONCanada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, ONClaridge Collection, Montreal, QCGovernment of CanadaImperial Palace, Tokyo, JapanMacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SKSaskatchewan Arts BoardSaskatchewan House, London, EnglandVictoria and Albert Museum, London, EnglandSelected Solo and Group Exhibitions2012Prairie Gothic, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SK2002 FIRE+EARTH: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics, Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Thunder Bay, Ontario.2001 FIRE+EARTH: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics,The Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina, Saskatchewan.2000 FIRE+EARTH: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia.1998 FIRE+EARTH: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics, Itabashi Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan.1997 FIRE+EARTH: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics, Burlington Art Centre.1988 Feat of Clay: The Fifth Anniversary of the Permanent Collection, Burlington Art Centre, Burlington, Ontario.1978 The Saskatchewan Arts Board Collection, Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina, Saskatchewan.1973 Canada Trajectories, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France.1972 Canada House, London, England.1969 Osaka '70; Osaka, Japan.Selected LinksSaskatchewan Network for Art CollectingVirtual Museum: Ann JamesSaskatchewan Arts Board: Ann James
