      Est: $800 - $1,200

Lajos (Louis) Jambor (Hungarian/American, 1884-1955), "Practicing the Piano", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 34 in. x 42 in., framed. Provenance: The Zigler Art Museum, Jennings, LA. Note: Lajos or Louis Jambor was born in Nagyvárd, Hungary in 1884. As a young man, the government of the time (Austro-Hungarian Empire) recognized his talents early, and he was sent to the Royal Arts Academy in Budapest; later his art education would continue in Italy and Germany. After his immigration from Europe to New York City in 1923, Jambor continued his main area of work as a muralist. Jambor’s murals were mainly found in houses of worship (most famously St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest) and in private residences. In the U.S., he was able to use his talents in many other artistic areas including painting backgrounds for movies (Gulliver’s Travels) and in book illustration (1947 edition of Little Women). Jambor was active in artist circles and by the time of his death in 1954, he was a member of: American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists and former president of the Salamagundi Club. He admired the ideals of the Renaissance and closely studied the painters of that time, which lent a classical manner to his genre scenes, as seen in the lot offered here.
