The publishing house Braun & Schneider was founded in 1843 by Kaspar Braun and Friedrich Schneider. The publishing house was preceded by Caspar Braun & v. Dessauer, Anstalt für Holzschneidekunst, which was founded by Kaspar Braun in 1838. He thus took up the technique of wood engraving further developed by Thomas Bewick towards the end of the 18th century, which became the leading reproduction technique for illustrations in the 19th century.       GUSTAV JÄGER - zugeschrieben 1808 - Leipzig - 1871 Verklärung Christi. Aktstudien. Bleistiftzeichnung um 1846. - Auf chamoisfarbenem "J. Whatman 1846"-Vélin. 22 x 34,5 cm. Schwach fleckig, etwas angestaubt und stellenweise leicht gebräunt sowie mit Knitterspuren. Die Figuren der vorliegenden Zeichnung sind in Anordnung und Gestus so sehr Jägers 1846/48 entstandenem gleichnamigen Fresko im Herderzimmer des Weimarer Schlosses ähnlich, daß man die Zeichnung als Vorstudie sehen kann. Der Künstler war auch an den Illustrationen der sog. Cotta-Bibel von 1850 beteiligt. [ms] geschätzter Preis: 400,00 EUR
