The mighty trunk rises in the sunlight against the dark background of the forest. At the foot of the old oak tree an old maid rests with a wicker basket. Inscribed and signed by the artist at the bottom of the stone: "Fontainebleau | J. Jacottet". At lower right is the blind stamp of the Parisian publisher Eugène Bulla (Lugt no. 4802).
