    ANTONIO JACOBSEN: Daniel Steinmann.

    Est: €2,800 -

ANTONIO (NICOLO GASPARO) JACOBSEN Kopenhagen 1850 - 1921 West Hoboken, New Jersey Daniel Steinmann. Gerahmt. Est: $3,000 - $5,000

An original oil painting on canvas by artist Antonio Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921) depicting the historic steamship SS Roanoke underway at sea. The SS Roanoke (1882–1916) has a colorful history, best known as a transit vessel for transporting people, freight, and gold between Seattle and the Klondike gold fields, ultimately sinking in 1916 off the coast of California, claiming over 50 lives. It is signed and dated 1898 in lower right-hand corner along with 31 Palisade Avenue Hoboken, NJ. Piece has an overall yellow tint of surface, possibly the oxidation of the oil-based paint. ANTONIO JACOBSEN (AMERICAN / DANISH, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE OCEAN LINER SS FRANCE, oil on board, a large example with vessel in profile flying what appears to be a French flag, signed and dated lower right "A. Jacobsen 1912". Housed in a period gilt frame. Dated 1912. 23 1/2" x 47 1/2" sight, 29 3/4" x 53 3/4" OA.  Catalogue Note: An iconic four-stack transatlantic liner, the SS France made its maiden voyage in April of 1912, just days after the tragedy of a similar vessel, HMS Titanic. It would remain in service for two decades, and served as a hospital during World War I. The present depiction by Jacobsen may well be from the ship's first transatlantic voyage in 1912.

'Massachusetts' ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (DANISH/AMERICAN, 1850-1921) The Atlantic Transport Line’s steamer 'Massachusetts' calling for a pilot off Sandy Hook (for entry into New York) Signed, dated and addressed 'A. Jacobsen 1893 705 Palisade Av. West Hoboken n.j' (lower right) Oil on canvas 29 x 49in. (73.5 x 124.5cm.) Built for the Atlantic Transport Line by Harland and & Wolff at Belfast and launched on 17th December 1891, Massachusetts was one of four near-identical sisters commissioned for the company’s profitable London – New York route. Massachusetts was registered at 5,673 tons gross and measured 445 feet in length with a 49-foot beam. With accommodation for 100 first class passengers plus steerage, she was powered by twin screws and could make 14 knots at full steam. After six successful years under A.T.L. colours, she and her sisters were bought by the U.S. Government for use as emergency troop transports for the Spanish-American War -which began in 1898 – and all were renamed for famous generals, Massachusetts taking the name of Sheridan. Her years as a U.S. troop transport ended abruptly in 1910 when she was wrecked by stranding off the Barnegat Light, New Jersey. original condition, old scattered retouching, patchwork in sea, needs to be relined, bad infilling in areas, paint thin to righthand side margin.

At that time, he began painting portraits of the vessels of the Old Dominion Steamship Line, creating about 6000 ship portraits in the New York Harbor between 1876 and 1919. Later in his life, his daughter Helen painted the skies and water of his pictures, and his son Carl even painted some of the ships credited to Jacobsen.
