ELBERT M. JACKSON (American, 1896-1962) Painting

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

ELBERT McGRAN JACKSON (American, 1896-1962) "Labor Day" oil on linen, unframed. Signed lower right E.M. Jackson. Measures 30" x 23" Good condition, with light scattered inpainting on bottom. Elbert McGran Jackson was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia and moved to New York. In 1923, he started as a commercial artist with his own studio. He was a protégé of the illustrator James Montgomery Flagg. Jackson's first illustration cover for the Saturday Evening Post was a painting of a bell hop delivering an old shoe on a silver tray to a honeymoon couple in a hotel. The original painting hung in the main office of the Curtis publishing Company in Philadelphia. Later in life, Mr. Jackson designed and silkscreened high-end upholstery fabrics, draperies, interior screens, and wall coverings for upscale New York City interiors and had an office and showroom on 57th Street in New York. Jackson set up the silkscreen/fabric factory operation in the greenhouses of his Montauk estate. The painting came directly from the Elbert McGran Jackson estate in Montauk, New York, known as the Thomas estate prior to Jackson. For a short time, Jackson Pollock and Roger Wilcox worked at the operation. In the book "Jackson Pollock - An American Saga" by Stephen Naifeh, it gives the story of Pollock and Wilcox walking the twelve miles to Montauk to sign up to work at the factory (p.558). The painting was gifted by Jackson to a friend in the 1950's, along with the Alfonso Ossorio - Lot 241. Painting measures 40" x 26 ¼". Frame measures 42 ¾" x 29". Guaranteed to be authentic. Andrew Thomas, who built the estate, was an architect who worked for John. D. Rockefeller and invented the "garden apartment". He also entertained NY Mayor Jimmy Walker. Scanned images of the A.J. Thomas estate, a 1963 obituary for Jackson, and text from an interview with Elizabeth Job from the book "Montauk: An anecdotal History" by Peg Winski, are included and provide additional background history. The Kelly Collection of Illustrated Art's website says "Although E.M. Jackson studied art as a child, he later went to college to receive a degree in architecture from Georgia Tech. After several years, he decided that what he really wanted to be was an illustrator. He moved to New York City and, with the help of more established illustrators, was able to make a living. Jackson's graceful way of illustrating women led to a number of story commissions as well as cover assignments for such magazines as Collier's, The Ladies' Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post.".
