*The Orders, Decorations and Medals awarded to Major-General Sir Herbert William Jackson, C.B. K.B.E

          Est: £2,000 - £3,000

*The Orders, Decorations and Medals awarded to Major-General Sir Herbert William Jackson, C.B. K.B.E., Gordon Highlanders, a central figure in the Egypt and Sudan campaigns, and widely considered one of the three ‘founding fathers’ of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan alongside Wingate and Slatin. Having served with distinction in Egypt with the Gordon Highlanders, he subsequently served as officer commanding the 11th Sudanese Battalion in the Nile Campaign of 1896-98 and was officer commanding the troops at Fashoda, where he played a key role in delicate diplomatic negotiations with the French commander Marchant. Known as ‘Jackson Pasha’, he was appointed Deputy Sirdar and was served as Governor of Dongola Province between 1902-22, where he retired, comprising: The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Civil Division, Companion’s badge in silver-gilt, bearing hallmarks for London dated 1889; The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Knight Commander’s set of insignia, comprising neck badge and breast star in silver-gilt and enamels; The Order of the Nile, 2nd Class set of insignia, comprising neck badge and breast star in silver-gilt and enamels; The Order of Osmanieh, Commander’s neck badge in silver-gilt and enamels; The Order of the Medjidie, Commander’s neck badge in silver and enamels with a gold centre; Egypt and Sudan, 1882-89, reverse dated 1882, 6 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, Suakin 1884, El-Teb_Tamaai, The Nile 1884-85, Gemaizah 1888, Toski 1889 (Lieut. H. W. Jackson. Gordon Highlanders.) with privately made clasp carriage, renamed in a contemporary style; Queen’s Sudan, 1896-97 (Kaima. H. T. Jackson. + Bey. 11/ Sud: E. A.), error to initial, with official correction to ‘+ Bey’ suggesting a change from earlier rank or title; Khedive’s Star, dated 1882, with Tokar clasp, unnamed as issued; Khedive’s Sudan, 1896-1908, 6 clasps, Firket, Hafir, Sudan 1897, The Atbara, Khartoum, Sudan 1889, unnamed as issued; Group loose, light wear and minor flaking of enamel to orders, medals good very fine (11). Major-General Sir Herbert William Jackson, K.B.E., C.B. (1861-1931) was born on 5 February 1861, the son of H. T. Jackson of Frowlesworth Hall, Leicester. Jackson was educated at Rugby, abroad in France and Germany, and then at Sandhurst, after which he was commissioned in 1881 with the Gordon Highlanders. He served with the Gordon Highlanders in Egypt and was present at the battle of Tel El Kebir in 1882, at El Teb and Tamai in 1884, and in the Nile Campaign of 1884-5. He also served as a subaltern in General Wolseley’s Staff, and was present during the relief expedition for General Gordon. Soon afterwards he was seconded for service with the Egyptian Constabulary or ‘Gendarmerie’ on 15 July1886 and remained with them until 1888, taking part in the operation near Suakin. Later that year he was later transferred to serve in the Egyptian Army, being appointed Commanding Officer of the 11th Sudanese Battalion – a battalion well-known for its ‘ferocity in battle and unruliness in camp’ (‘Soldiers of the Nile’ by Henry Keown-Boyd, refers). After a lengthy period of service on the Nile Frontier, he took part in various other battles and actions during the reconquest on the Sudan under Kitchener (including at the Battle of Atbara, where he lost sight in one eye). After the Battle of Omdurman, Jackson was dispatched with this battalion to Fahsoda as part of Kitchener’s escort during the confrontation with the French. When Kitchener returned north, Jackson was left in command of the garrison. Given his time spent in France during his early education, both he and the French General Marchand were able to reach an understanding, as Jackson dealt with the situation in a tactful and diplomatic manner. While the dispute was settled at the government level, Jackson’s manner was reported as having been crucial. During his time in the Egyptian Army, Jackson progressed swiftly through the officer ranks, being promoted to Captain on 1 September 1891, Major on 29 March 1900, and to Colonel on 3 April 1901. In 1900 he was appointed Governor of Berber, and in 1902 he was appointed Governor of Dongola Province, in which position he would remain until his retirement in 1902, being called upon to act as Sirdar, Governor-General and Inspector General during the absence of the incumbents. So well-respected was he by the local people, that ‘Pasha Jackson’ chose to remain at Merowe with his Sudanese wife, seeing out his final years. Other medals named to this recipient are known to the market. Another Queen’s Sudan medal has been offered by a British dealer in recent years (named ‘El Kaimakan H. J. Jackson Bey E.A.’), and an Egypt medal with 3 clasps is known to have been sold at Sotheby’s in 1986 (named ‘Lieut. H. W. Jackson 1/Gord. Highrs) with incorrect clasps Another group to this recipient is known to the market.
