    Clifford Jackson, 1927-2007, Self-Portrait

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Clifford Jackson 1927-2007 Self-Portrait 1962-1964 aquatint and etching on wove paper. 13 x 9-1/2 inches (image) full margins signed, titled, and inscribed, Prov Tryk (Danish for artist's proof ) Outstanding self-portrait of Clifford Jackson, surrounded by daisy petals—a deeply symbolic composition. The artist is depicted in his smock, with a contemplative pose, hand resting on his forehead. This etching was created during Jackson’s stay in Denmark, and it is particularly significant that he chose to embellish the background with daisy petals. The daisy, Denmark’s national flower, is a familiar and beloved sight across the country, blooming in gardens, parks, and wild meadows. More than just a botanical motif, the daisy embodies the heart and soul of Denmark, even inspiring iconic jewelry designs by renowned Danish designer Georg Jensen. This etching is an exquisite and rare work by Jackson, reflecting both his personal journey and the cultural landscape that surrounded him.

Clifford Jackson, b. 1927, Nobody Knows

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Clifford Jackson b. 1927 Nobody Knows 1982 drypoint etching on paper 11 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches (image) signed, titled and dated, with "imp." in pencil (l.r.) "E.A. Toornål" (l.l.) "E.A." is epreuves d'artiste, or artist's proof, and "Toornål" is the Swedish term for drypoint. The notation, "imp" (l.r.) indicates the artist printed it himself. Clifford Jackson was a visual artist and jazz musician. Like many of his contemporaries, such as Walter Williams, Harold Cousins, Harvey Cropper, Larry Potter, Sam Middleton, Herb Gentry, and Earl B. Miller, he chose to work in Scandinavia, rather than lose opportunities due to racial inequalities in the United States. He studied at the Royal Academy in Stockholm and his work is in the collection of the Sundsvall Museum, Sweden. Jackson's work was included in the 1964 exhibition 10 American Negro Artists Living and Working in Europe in Copenhagen. Catalog note: BAA is grateful for the help from Josephine Rydeng of Obro Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark in cataloging this lot.
