ALFREDO JAAR (Santiago de Chile, 1956). “Kanji.” Mixed technique on silk. This piece belongs to the Kimono Joya collection.

          Est: €1,500 - €2,000

ALFREDO JAAR (Santiago de Chile, 1956). "Kanji". Mixed media on silk. This piece belongs to the Kimono Joya collection. Size: 38 x 39 cm; 53 x 53 cm (frame). This work belongs to the exhibition project entitled "Treasures on silk. Oriental daydreams", created by Fumiko Negishi and Carlos Muñiz. The project not only comprised an exhibition of 30 Haoris intervened by various artists from the international contemporary art scene, but was accompanied by a set of 10 Tanka poems by Junko Okawara, objects of Wabi Sabi philosophy and action painting. In the creation of this collection, the inspiration of the exhibition entitled "Kimono Joya, Wabi Sabi the beauty of imperfection" has been fundamental. This exhibition was created on the basis of an artistic project of national and international recognition: Kimono -joya; which after having been exhibited in several cities in Spain and Japan, was presented in the Matadero hall in Madrid in 2023. Each of the artists created their artistic design based on the traditional Japanese garment known as Haori. Each of the works presents a reduced T-shaped format, following the idea of idealising the miniature, a concept that harmonises with oriental philosophy. The material itself transports the viewer to the trade routes between East and West and to the natural exchange that is the basis for the enrichment of a profound knowledge. The Haori, as a cultural identity, has been intervened by each artist in a personal way and serves in this case as a catalyst for this exchange and a canvas for the personal vision of each of the artists who have participated in this project. Born into a family of Palestinian origin, Jaar studied film directing at the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura in 1979, and architecture at the Universidad de Chile until 1981. It was during this period that he began his artistic production. His work has been exhibited in important art spaces such as the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1994), the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (1992), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (1992), and the Sala de Arte de la Fundación Telefónica in Santiago de Chile (2006), among many others.

          Est: €8,000 - €10,000

ALFREDO JAAR (Santiago de Chile, 1956). "Looking for Marcel Duchamp", 2004. Hand-intervened photographic montage, copy 4/10. Signed, dated and titled in the lower area. Size: 108 x 75 cm. If there is one artist whom Alfredo Jaar considers indispensable and fertile fertiliser for the future of art, it is Marcel Duchamp. What the Chilean artist is grateful to Duchamp for is having opened up a path towards conceptual art, taking the "visual" arts beyond visuality. Homages to Duchamp are frequent in Jaar's work, an artist who, unlike the Frenchman, shows a direct commitment to fighting injustice and abuses of power. But despite the apolitical appearance of Duchamp's work, his way of convulsing perception and ways of thinking through art has served artists like Jaar to use the image in a different way. For Jaar, what is important is no longer what the images show, but what they hide. The ghost of Duchamp is still floating among us 100 years later, Jaar asserts. The image of the balcony (Duchamp often played with the idea of the threshold: windows, doors, keyholes...) in "Looking for Marcel Duchamp" is pregnant with conceptual suggestions and symbolism. Trained in Architecture and Film at the Chilean-North American Institute of Culture and the University of Chile, he lives and works in New York. His artistic practice is multidisciplinary, exploring unequal power relations and the social and political fractures resulting from globalisation. He often incorporates photographs, texts and historical references in his highly symbolic installations, performances and devices in public spaces. Despite his clear desire for historical denunciation, Jaar does not renounce aesthetic intention. One of his best known works is the Rwanda Project (1994-2000), a large-scale photographic work on the genocide that took place in this African country. He has made numerous public interventions, some of which have become iconic, such as A Logo for America (1987) - a pioneering intervention on an electronic screen in New York's Times Square - and The Cloud (2000) - a performative project on both sides of the US-Mexico border. Since the 1990s, Jaar has exhibited at the world's most prestigious centres: the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (1992), the Whitechapel Gallery in London (1992), the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1994), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome (2005), the Musée des Beaux Arts in Lausanne (2007), the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2011) and the Kiasma in Helsinki (2014). He has participated in the Venice Biennale (1986, 2007, 2013), São Paulo Biennale (1987, 1989, 2010), Istanbul Biennale (1995), Gwangju Biennale (1995, 2000) and Johannesburg Biennale (1997), among others. His work can be found in numerous prominent collections, including the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the LACMA in Los Angeles, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Tate Britain in London, the Museo de Artes Visuales in Santiago de Chile and the MACBA in Barcelona.
