    gouache and watercolor on paper, signed and dated 1949 at lower right, matted and framed under glass. SS 12.25 x 17 in.; DOA 25.25 x 29.5 in. Gregory Ivy was the first art department chair at UNC-Greensboro and founder of the Weatherspoon Art Museum in 1941. He was greatly influenced by the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG), a relatively short lived movement with the intention "to carry painting beyond the appearance of the physical world, through new concepts of space, color, light, and design, to imaginative realms that are idealistic and spiritual." Exhibited: Scent of the Pine, You Know How I Feel: North Carolina Art from the Jonathan P. Alcott Collection, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Farmville, Virginia, June 20 - October 18, 2014 (illustrated in the accompanying catalogue).     Gregory Ivy (NC, 1904-1985), Rolling Clouds, watercolor and gouache on paper, signed and dated in pencil at lower right "Ivy 1939," matted and framed under glass. Originally from Missouri, Gregory Ivy accepted a position as head of the art department at the Woman's College in Greensboro (now UNC-G) in 1935 and was instrumental in developing the department and establishing the Weatherspoon Art Museum. A highly respected modernist, Ivy exhibited his work throughout the country during his lifetime and in 2006 the Weatherspoon featured a retrospective of his work.
