      ANTIQUE RUSSIAN OIL PAINTING BY NIKOLAI IVANOFF

      An antique oil on canvas painting by Nikolai Ivanoff, 1885 to 1931, Russian, member of the Union of Russian Artists in France. The artwork titled Baba Yaga House was created in 1909 and depicts an old house of wicked witch from Russian fairy tales. Nikolai Ivanoff was a Russian artist and illustrator. In 1907 he emigrated from Russia for political reasons and settled in Paris. In 1908 he worked under the guidance of T. Steinlen. He painted landscapes of the environs of Paris and Brittany, and pictures on Russian subjects: Old Town, Russian Prison, Enchanted Forest. He created paintings on the themes of Russian fairy tales and epics. One of a kind of artwork.

Ivanoff’ Dimensions: 60 x 73 cm Frame: 77.5 x 90 cm Good condition Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with age and wear. The canvas is relined along the edges and has three fabric patches on the reverse lower half. The paint surface shows stronger craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching along the upper edge and also partly within the depiction. The vertical center ledge of the stretcher has caused a light pressure mark in the canvas. The frame is well-preserved with only a few marks. The stretcher measures 60 x 73 cm and the frame 77.5 x 90 cm. Nikolaj V. Ivanov (1885-1931) Nikolai Ivanov was born in Moscow, where he received his artistic training at the School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1907 he moved to Paris, where he mainly worked as an illustrator for Russian poets, fairy tales and folk tales. He was also represented with works in numerous exhibitions, including the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne. As a painter he was specialized in landscapes of his home county, as well as of the urban areas around Paris and Brittany.
