Condition: Painting and frame are in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. Some tiny pinholes can be seen scattered. The framed dimensions measure 47 x 56.8 cm, the dimensions of the canvas are 35.9 x 45.7 cm. Hans (Jeann [John Jakob]) Iten (1874-1930) The artist was born in 1874 in Zurich and studied at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen under Johannes Stauffacher. He then worked in Paris for a couple of years, where he became friends with Pierre Montezin. In 1904 Iten moved to Ireland where he first worked as designer of damask in Belfast. He then purchased a studio and settles in Belfast. Iten was very active in the local artistic live: in 1906 he was Vice-President of the Belfast Art Society and in 1930 he was one of the first nine members if the Ulster Academy of Arts. In 1930 he returned to Switzerland. While Iten was in Paris, he predominately painted city and landscapes, yet in Ireland he successfully started producing still lifes, which mostly consisted of harmoniously arranged still lifes with flowers in gorgeous bright colors. But Iten was also enchanted by the Irish countryside, where he found a multitude of motifs, such as remote cottages, the stormy sea or the gentle, lush green hills of Ireland. Regular holidays in Switzerland were used to also paint the native landscape. Iten’s works are on permanent display in Dublin and Belfast and were also on display at exhibitions in Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin, where they have been greatly admired. He also submitted paintings to theRoyal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in Dublin, the first being displayed in 1908. In total, almost 50 of Iten's pictures appeared at the RHA during his lifetime. In addition he submitted successfully to the Society of French Artists and exhibited in several UK galleries such as: Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; the Fine Arts Society, London; and the Royal Academy (RA).
