Jozef Israëls Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, Lithographer, Water colorist, b. 1824 - d. 1911

Jozef Israëls (27 January 1824 – 12 August 1911) was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.[2]

He continued his studies subsequently in Amsterdam, studying at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts which later became the State Academy for Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Jan Kruseman and attended the drawing class at the academy. From September 1845 until May 1847 he was in Paris, working in the history painter Picot's studio and taking classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under James Pradier, Horace Vernet and Paul Delaroche. He returned to Amsterdam in September 1845 where he resumed his studies at the Academy until May 1847.[3] Israels remained in Amsterdam until 1870, when he moved to The Hague and became a leading member of the Hague School of landscape painters.[4]

He married Aleida Schaap and the couple had two children, a daughter Mathilde Anna Israëls and a son, Isaac Lazarus Israëls, born Amsterdam 3 February 1865, who also became a fine art painter.

                Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Josef Israels (1824-1911) Watercolor on paper, signed lower left, measures 6 x 9 and 13.5 x 17.5 inches w/frame. From an Upstate New York estate. Jozef Israels was educated at the Amsterdam Academy (1840) and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Vernet and Delaroche. On his return to Amsterdam in 1847, he worked as a historical and religious painter and increasingly, from 1852, concentrated on Dutch history. The work for which he was best known dates from the 1860s, when his brushwork loosened and he developed a soft tonal range of grays and browns (e.g. Maternal Bliss, 1890, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). In the 1870's he settled in The Hague and became one of the leading members of The Hague School. He has been called the "Dutch Millet" due to his similar subject matter and sympathy for the poor (e.g. Growing Old, 1878, The Hague). During his lifetime Israels won great popularity for his piously sentimental approach to his work.Israels' paintings were especially popular in Britain after Fishermen Carrying a Drowned Man (1861, London, National Gallery) was exhibited at the Royal Academy. His participation in the Paris Exhibition of 1878 cemented Israel's reputation. His son, Isaac (1865-1934) also worked at The Hague, but in a style almost completely independent of his father's. In his later life Israels' work was influenced by his son, towards a lighter, more impressionistic palette. Max Liebermann, his pupil and contemporary, wrote that "Israels first realized himself at an age at which most painters have already produced their best work; and, had he had the misfortune to die at forty, Holland would have been unable to boast of one of her greatest sons."

JOSEF ISRAËLS (Groningen, 1824-Scheveningen, 1911). "Peasants." Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Presents an exhibition label on the back. Measurements: 19 x 28 cm; 31,5 x 41 cm (frame). In this painting, with the peasant family with cart advancing by a wild road, the stylistic proximity of this Dutch painter and the French Millet is made manifest. Like Millet, Israëls painted the life of humble people with profound humanity, although -according to Duranty- in the Dutchman's work the sadness and suffering of the working or rural classes seems to be perceived with greater crudeness. Josef Israëls was an outstanding member of the Hague School. Born into a family of Sephardic origin, although his father wanted him to be a merchant, he finally allowed him to develop an artistic career, on the condition that the courses, given to him by professors Buys and van Wicheren in his hometown, passed through paternal supervision. That pressure would lead Jozef to move to Amsterdam, as a pupil of Jan Kruseman and later to Paris, where between 1845 and 1847 he attended the classes of Horace Vernet and Paul Delaroche at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then returned to Amsterdam, where he would remain until 1870 to move and settle in The Hague. Israëls began making portraits and paintings of historical subjects, following the dictates of Romanticism in his early years. An illness would take him as a convalescent to the fishing village of Zandvoort, near Haarlem, where he was able to delve into the tragedy of the most forgotten classes, which further stimulated his solidarity gaze. Among the works of that period are The Fisherman of Zandvoort (in the Amsterdam gallery), The Silent House (which won the gold medal at the Brussels Salon of 1858) and Poor Village (which received a prize in Manchester). In 1862 he achieved some success in London with Shipwreck and The Cradle, two paintings that the Athenaeum magazine described as the most moving of the exhibition. Other works by him include The Widower (in the Mesdag collection), We Grow Old and Alone in the World (Amsterdam Gallery), An Interior (Dordrecht Gallery), Frugal Meal (Glasgow Museum), Between Field and Seashore and The Curiosity Dealer (which won two medals of honor at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle). He was much admired by Vincent van Gogh, who often quoted him in letters he wrote to his brother Theo. Some of Van Gogh's early paintings show a strong influence of Israëls, as is the case of The Potato Eaters.
