Isaac Israëls Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, Water colorist, Pastel Artist, b. 1865 - d. 1934

Isaac Lazarus Israëls (3 February 1865 – 7 October 1934) was a Dutch painter associated with the Amsterdam Impressionism movement.

The son of Jozef Israëls, one of the most respected painters of the Hague School, and Aleida Schaap, Isaac Israëls displayed precocious artistic talent from an early age.

Between 1880 and 1882 he studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, where he met George Hendrik Breitner who was to become a lifelong friend. In 1881, when he was 16, he sold a painting, Bugle Practice, even before it was finished to the artist and collector Hendrik Willem Mesdag.[3] Two portraits he made in the same year of his grandmother and a family friend, Nannette Enthoven (below), attest to the technical ability he had attained by that age.[4][5] Starting in 1878, Israëls made annual visits to the Salon des Artistes Français with his father and in 1882 made his debut there with Military Burial.[6] In the 1885 Salon he received an honourable mention for his Transport of Colonial Soldiers.[7][8] At this time he was reading Émile Zola,[9] as was Breitner, and following his triumph at the Salon he spent a year travelling in the Belgian mining districts and elsewhere.

Beginning 1886, Israëls lived in Amsterdam and registered with Breitner at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts to complete his schooling. Both of them, however, quickly abandoned the academy for the more progressive circle of the Tachtigers, an influential group of writers and artists of the time. This was a group that insisted style must reflect content and that emotionally charged subjects can only be represented by an equally intense technique. Influenced by this philosophy, Israëls became a painter of the streets, cafes, and cabarets of Amsterdam. At this time he met the Dutch engraver and painter Willem de Zwart who also became a lifelong friend.

He often spent his summers with his father in the Dutch seaside resort of Scheveningen near The Hague. Guests included Édouard Manet and Max Liebermann. Interested by the changing light of sun and sea, he painted many colourful seaside scenes.

Towards the end of the century, Israëls was introduced by his childhood friend and portrait painter Thérèse Schwartze to the Amsterdam fashion house Hirsch & Cie [nl] at the Leidseplein. Israëls portrayed the whole range of the world of haute couture, from seamstress to wealthy client, gaining access even to the fitting-rooms.

Israëls moved to Paris in 1904, establishing his studio at 10 rue Alfred Stevens, 48.881784°N 2.338651°E, near Montmartre and just yards away from the studio of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec whom he admired, as he also did Edgar Degas. As in Amsterdam, he painted the Parisian specific motifs: the public parks, cafes, cabarets and bistros, as well as such subjects as fairgrounds and circus acrobats. Likewise he sought out the fashion houses Paquin and Drecoll [fr] to continue his studies of the world of fashion. However, he only exhibited once in this period, in 1909.

At the outbreak of the First World War he was living in London, where he found new subjects in horse-riding at Rotten Row and in ballerinas and boxers. He returned to Holland for the duration of the war, living alternately in The Hague, Amsterdam and Scheveningen, where he worked primarily as a portrait painter. Amongst his sitters was Magaretha Gertrud Zelle, better known as Mata Hari, executed as a spy in France in 1917. Her portrait can be seen at the Kröller-Müller Museum. Other sitters included Johanna van Gogh-Bonger and the feminist physician Aletta Jacobs, although he also portrayed ordinary subjects such as girls in the street and telephone operators.

Following the war, Israëls visited Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm and London. He spent the years 1921 to 1922 travelling in India and the Dutch East Indies, sketching and painting the vibrant life of South East Asia and notably the gamelan players of Bali. On his return, he settled at Koninginnegracht 2, The Hague, 52.085924°N 4.315014°E, his deceased parents' home, where he remained for the rest of his life, nevertheless making regular trips abroad to London, Italy and the French Riviera.

At the age of 63, he won a Gold Medal at the 1928 Olympic Games for his painting Red Rider,[10] an art competition then being part of the games.[11][12]

He died in The Hague on 7 October 1934, aged 69, as a result of a street accident a few days before. His partner at that time was Sophie de Vries.

Isaac Israëls 1865-1934 Original complete frame with passe-partout and glass. Son of the Hague School artist Jozef Israels, Isaac Israels was a leading figure of the Amsterdam Impressionism movement, renowned for his highly personal, luminous and free brushwork and subjects from his travels to Paris, London, and Indonesia. At the mere age of thirteen, Israels attended the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague where he befriended Georg Hendrik Breitner. Between 1880 and 1884, Israels and Breitner were both particularly fascinated by military subjects and in 1882 Israels debuted at the Salon with Military Burial. In 1886, the two artists enrolled at the Reijksacademie in Amsterdam but after only a year the pair left the academy and joined the circle of the Tachtigers (or ‘Eighties’ group), a progressive Dutch movement of writers and artists. Through trips to Paris with his father, Israels had come into contact with the French realist writers Emile Zola and J.K. Huysmans. In 1894, Israels received a permit to take his easel to the streets and paint the urban milieu en plein air. 1900, he was introduced by his childhood friend Thérèse Schwartze to the Amsterdam fashion house Hirsch & Cie, in whose studios he regularly painted. In 1904, Israels moved to Paris. The parks, cafes, cabarets, and street scenes which Israels studied in Amsterdam continued to be his chosen subject in Paris; however, he also took to painting acrobats and fairgrounds. Israels moved to London in the spring of 1913 but grew increasingly frustrated here as the outbreak of the First World War prevented him from painting out in the streets. He redirected his interests towards boxers and wrestlers. He returned to Holland for the remainder of the war, moving between The Hague, Amsterdam and Scheveningen, where he used to holiday with his father, accompanied by other artists such as Edouard Manet. After the war, Israels passed much of 1919 in Paris and then spent 1920 in Copenhagen, Stockholm and London. Between 1921 and 1922, Israels and his friend Jan Veth went to Java and Bali after befriending many East Indians during the war. Israels was enraptured by the landscape and people whom he encountered in South East Asia. He sketched the household of the local ruler at Solo, and produced numerous watercolours and oil paintings of Balinese women, Chinese weddings, dancing girls, bands, beggars and children. Upon his return, Israels spent the greater part of 1923 in The Hague where he took over his father’s studio. During this time, his focus returned to theatre-life and portraits. Israels received significant awards for his artistic achievements including a knighthood in 1925 and an Olympic Award for Art three years later.

When Israels painted the present portrait of Henricus Joannes van Ogtrop, a stockbroker from Amsterdam, he had been living in Paris for two years. They would have met while Van Ogtrop was there for business. Van Ogtrop was known as a bon vivant, a passionate collector, and a leading board member of the Concertgebouw. Furthermore, Van Ogtrop undertook a profound modernisation of his house on the Herengracht in Amsterdam. This renovation, mainly focused on the interior and garden, was carried out by the leading modern architect Karel de Bazel and to this day bears witness to a fine artistic sense. Van Ogtrop is portrayed with casual calmness and a sense of immediacy, common to most of Israel’s sought-after works made during his time in Paris, where he stayed until 1913. Breitner (1857-1923) Isaac Israels (1865-1934)’, 21 September-16 November 2008, in exhibition brochure ill. p. 21, as: 'final painting'.Provenance:-Collection of the artist; The artist's studio sale, Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, ‘Atelier Isaac Israels (IIième partie)', 10-11 December 1935, lot 151, as: ‘Twee vriendinnen'.-In the collection of the family of the present owner since at least the 1960s. , Isaac Israels painted many portraits throughout his life: sometimes these were commissioned portraits of directors of firms in The Hague or actresses like Fie Carelsen, but most often, his friends and girlfriends were his beloved subjects. Well-known portraits include those of Mata Hari, the collector Simon Pinkhof, a young Kees van Dongen, a semi-nude woman positioned in front of Vincent van Gogh's 'Sunflowers', and his girlfriend Sofie de Vries. Later in Scheveningen, he portrayed the promenading ladies on the beach or the Wandelhoofd Koningin Wilhelmina (the Pier) and the fisherwomen. Finally, in Paris, he showed the ladies seated at tables in entertainment venues such as the Moulin de la Galette and Bal Tabarin. This portrait of two girlfriends is sketched very loosely. Isaac Israels quickly painted a whitish background onto which he could capture these two ladies. He did this directly on the wet canvas, without first sketching the outline with pencil. The woman in the foreground is more detailed than her friend: her face, blouse with a red collar, white shawl, and gray skirt are clearly visible. Her arms and hands - one on her skirt, one on her hip - still needed work. Her friend, who stands in her shadow, literally and figuratively, could use some refinement too: a figure whose facial features are only just discernible, wearing a gray dress with a white collar. Her arms disappear into nothingness. Who are these girlfriends? Perhaps they are two shop assistants from Maison Wijnman, the fabric store on the Venestraat, where Israels liked to come and sketch towards the end of his life, to later develop those impressions in his studio. When Isaac Israels died in his house on Koninginnegracht (October 7, 1934), a few days after being hit by a car, there were still many canvases on easels in his studio, more canvases against the walls, many pastels and watercolors in large folders, sketchbooks in drawers. His sister, Mathilde Cohen Tervaert-Israels, was his sole heir. A painter only signed his work when a canvas went to an art dealer for sale, so the question arose: what to do with all these unsigned works? Together with the director of the Gemeentemuseum, H.E. van Gelder, and a notary, an atelier stamp was designed, an oval model with the text 'Atelier Isaac Israels'. The stamp was used with red ink on the many paintings, watercolours, and pastels to authenticate all of this. The ‘Two girlfriends’ we present in this auction provide a beautiful snapshot of the time and shows the layout of a painting as Isaac Israels envisioned it. Whether it is truly his last painting does not really matter. It is touching to consider what the painting might have looked like if Isaac Israels had finished it.Willemien de Vlieger-Moll, researcher and writer on the life and work of Isaac Israels, oil on canvas, 111x86 cm, signed with the artist's studio stamp 'Atelier Isaac Israels' (lower right), Isaac Israels (1865-1934)

Reading in the Bois de Boulogne, During the fin-de-siècle, Paris emerged as the vibrant cultural hub of Europe, profoundly shaping the artistic trajectory of Dutch painter Isaac Israels (1865-1934). Accompanied by his family, including his parents and sister, Isaac already made frequent visits to the city as a young boy, immersing himself in its artistic milieu through events like the annual Salon des Artistes Français. Later between 1903 and 1913 Israels lived in Paris to paint its bustling life. Locations such as the Bois de Boulogne, the Champs Elysées, the Place Vendôme, and lively café-chantants, became an endless source of inspiration. This period marked a prolific phase in his career, during which he translated his impressions of Parisian life—capturing the grace and allure of its inhabitants—into a diverse array of dynamic paintings, watercolours, pastels, and drawings. Specifically, the Bois de Boulogne emerged as a significant muse, akin to the inspiration he had previously found in Amsterdam's Oosterpark. Israels, who was fluent in French, flourished within Paris's artistic circles, enjoying steady sales and forming friendships with fellow countryman Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) and the Fauvist painters. The present painting is a fine example of Israels' Parisian oeuvre, characterized by a typical Parisian palette and a brisk, expressive technique. In Paris, the French Impressionists influenced Israels to refine his colour palette. He began to favor a lighter and more translucent approach to oil painting. However, his artistic style remained consistent: characterized by a dynamic execution, bold and vigorous brushwork, yet yielding delicate outcomes. The interplay between the soft beige tones of the alley and the vibrant greens of the trees, enhanced by delicate strokes of colour, creates a harmonious composition. In the foreground of the composition, an elegant lady is reading a book on a bench, a few flâneurs are enjoying a stroll on the sunlit path of the park, and children are playing in the background. This scene encapsulates the timeless elegance and charm of Parisian urban life at the turn of the century, oil on canvas, 38x46 cm, signed 'Isaac/Israels' (lower right), Isaac Israels (1865-1934)

Isaac Lazarus Israels (1865 - 1934) Oil on woodpanel, signed lower right, measures (11 x 5.5 inches) w/frame (13.5 x 8.5 inches) The son of the cultivated and sophisticated painter Jozef Israels, Isaac Israels developed an interest in literature, travel and painting as a child. Between 1878 and 1880 he studied at the academy in The Hague. His special talent was obvious from an early age. In 1881, when he was 16, he painted a picture which was purchased even before it was finished by the artist and collector Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Apart from one or two extensive travels, from 1886 Israels lived in Amsterdam. In that year he registered at the Amsterdam Academy of Art to complete his schooling. However, he only stayed for the one year as there was not much more they could teach him. Israels often spent the summer months with his father in Scheveningen. Fascinated by the changeable light of sun and sea, he painted many colourful seaside scenes. In Amsterdam Israels was a close friend of George Hendrik Breitner.
