Dato' Tajuddin is known for his distinctive abstractions derived from the tranquility and stillness of deep open spaces. In Jendela, the artist has simplified the elements of geometrical shapes in his canvas to enhance the expression of forms. A contemplative journey as well as a contemplated arrival, not necessarily an idealised world but one from fragments of memories and touch-points, coaxing moods of lulling quality. Est: RM35,000 - RM68,000

With a title like Moon Shadow, one would expect a semblance of spherical orb with some kind of penumbra. Not painter-printmaker Dato' Tajuddin Ismail in this work from his riveting RED solo exhibition, where the darkened top strip of ambiguous floral buds (trees) is played against a nebulous geometric gridspace with an oblong red centre of controlled, constricted vistas. It is a dichotomy of the outward physical world against the inner space. The horizontal spaces stretch the eyes, slowing things down and forcing a glacial outlook, while the mind skirts on imponderables, to the point the effects of the moon: on time, light, space and the tides. Dato' Tajuddin Ismail won the Minor Awards in the 1979 Salon Malaysia and the National Drawing Competition (1977). He also clinched the Minor Awards in the National Graphic Art competition (1978), and the National Design Council (1994). It may look like a cartography of linked geometry and the odd organic shapes simulating an imaginary landscape. More a sensorial drifting of objects and thoughts, sentimental and poetic. Moving, hovering, inexorably… you can't see it, only feel it as it caresses your skin in a sense-surround idyll, in tones subdued. Dato' Tajuddin is much inspired by the Spanish Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida and American Bayside painter Richard Diebinkorn, but devises his own matrix of iconography. Est: RM28,000 - RM45,000

All the seemingly disparate shapes or forms are circumscribed by a circle, a perfect symbol of balance and harmony. Dato' Tajuddin Ismail started exploring round canvases in the early 2000s. This harmonious orchestration of forms, colour and space evokes a sense of contemplative calm. One gets a sense of musicality in this round work apart from the tranquility and beauty, and recalls the strains of the 1934 ballad, Blue Moon. Dato' Tajuddin’s abstract repertoire plays on nebulous coloured shapes in rhythmic interaction to create an experience and a revelation. As Piet Mondrian intoned: “Abstract art is not opposed to Nature… it is one with true human nature.” Dato' Tajuddin Ismail’s works reveal his exposures to, and imbibement of, paintings and sculptures of organic and geometric forms, Graphic Design (Art Centre College of Design in Los Angeles) and Interior Architecture (Pratt Institute in New York) after initial studies at the Mara Institute of Technology, which he later taught there. He was also apprenticed to Massimo Vignelli. He has won numerous awards including the Minor Award in the National Drawing Competition (1977), the National Graphic Art competition (1978), Salon Malaysia (1979) and the National Design Council (1994).

        Est: RM30,000 - RM50,000

There is no space as metaphorically infinite as that of the mind, and it and nothing captures the boundless spirit as Nature, even amidst man-made structural edifications. It is the pastoral, the panoramic that evokes the spiritual touches that effuse the beauty, physical and contemplative, with the infinite suggested by the horizontal push and pull of this work. Rentakalam represents already a maturity, and sophistication, of Dato' Tajuddin Ismail’s orchestration of such interplay of man’s affinity with Nature, organised in several ambiguous spheres of contemplation and dynamic redaction. Dato' Tajuddin Ismail’s art reveals his exposures to Graphic Art and Design, Interior Architecture and Fine Art, which he welded into a symbiosis of poetic and geometric forms. After his basic tutelage at the Mara Institute of Technology (1973), he is able to expand his horizon and explore in his further studies at the Art Centre College of Design, Los Angeles (Graphic Design, 1974), and the Pratt Institute, New York (post-graduate Interior Architecture, 1981, where he apprenticed to Massimo Vignelli). He was also a Fulbright research fellow (1987). He was to teach at the Universiti ITM, retiring as Associate Professor of Fine Art and Interior Architecture. As an artist, he clinched the Minor Awards in the National Drawing Competition (1977), the National Graphic Art competition (1978), the Salon Malaysia (1979), and the National Design Council (1994).

Tajuddin Ismail has developed a distinct visual style influenced by his education in architecture and design. This painting could be read as an analogy for life resembling a mosaic, a picture composed of various pieces and patterns, as one has to manage various aspects in life to strive towards one’s goal. Dynamic colours of blues, reds, white and black overlap and merge to present a complex labyrinth of space. Intricate mark making, movement of lines, and atmospheric colours unite to create structure and rhythm to the composition. Dato' Tajuddin graduated in Graphic Design at the Art Centre College of Design in Los Angeles, the United States, in 1974. He did his Post-graduate Interior Architecture at the Pratt Institute in New York in 1979-1981. In the approach of lyrical abstraction, I try to express the poetic and contemplative beauty of Allah’s creations.” Tajuddin Ismail does not believe in painting the same thing over and over again, but views his artworks as a development and progress from the previous one – new experiences and new techniques.

A melange of tendril lines emanating from the left and interconnected in an inchoate way, with two abrupt drops against a muted backdrop of dominant white. Solid and flexible, this lower half stark composition is wedged against a dense dark painterly surface above, with a right-angled white intrusion of negative flow. It’s a delicate play of balance and harmony, between Man and Nature (wind, water and earth) with a dualism inspired by the celebrated Peine del Viento (The Comb Of The Wind) steel-and-rock sculpture of Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The sculpture stood against a low rock promontory in San Sebastian, the sculptor’s hometown, stands like a sentinel, but Dato' Tajuddin Ismail’s adaptation is more interconnected in a tenuous way. Dato' Tajuddin marvelled at interplay of mass, volume and void when he first saw the sculpture in an exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London in the 1980s. The work was done during the time of his Simply Red solo at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur, in May 2002. Dato' Tajuddin draws great strength in his paintings from his solid foundation in graphic design and interior architecture — Graphic Design (Art Centre College of Design in Los Angeles, 1974) and post-graduate Interior Architecture (Pratt Institute in New York, 1979-1981, apprenticed under Massimo Vignelli), apart from the Mara Institute of Technology in Shah Alam (1969-1973). Dato’ Tajuddin Ismail’s Gridscape III, in sleep-inducing sombre colour bands, has demarcating thin strips horizontally, vertically and diagonally. The lines traverse seven unequal tiers, constricting the vision and making the space ambiguous, and fostering a sense of contemplation. This work is from Dato’ Tajuddin’s Innnerspace solo exhibition held at the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur in 1991. The series is inspired by grid-like structural composition with dark muted hues in subtle shades and values. As he explained: “The saturated coloured lines and stripes contrasted strongly with the planar horizontal bands creating spatial tension and depth without the use of conventional perspectives.” Dato’ Tajuddin’s firm sense of graphic design and Architecture was latent, which is unsurprising as he was trained in Graphic Design at the Art Centre College of Design in Los Angeles (1974) and did post-graduate Interior Architecture at the Pratt Institute in New York (1979-1981).
