Mad Anuar Ismail (b. 1952) Sulur Dan Hayat, 1981

      Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

It is such a spectacular combustion of colours with a diagonal dominated by green smithereens while a lush stream of yellow gushes down from the top left, with a thick reddish band anchoring further below. The splatters come thick and fast in the central region, to show an unrestrained and uncontrolled trajectory. Few would have guess rightly whose handiwork it is, that conjures a cosmic-spheric space of such incredible beauty, somewhat reminiscent of the works of Anuar Rashid. The thrust is manifestly like the Storm Riders (Perentas Ribut) sculptures, but encrusted onto canvas. Yes, few would have thought Mad Annuar Ismail is also fantastically adept at painting, as he has fired up the imagination with his sculptures. His sculptures and paintings are aptly described by curator-entrepreneur Jaafar Ismail as "filled with the mysticism of Nusantara. Clearly, he used colours to build and manage spaces." Mad Anuar Ismail, who graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1977, only had his first solo, Getaran, organised by Jaafar's Fergana Art, in August 2017. He had worked as a set cum graphic designer and even had a stint in a shipyard. But he has become a fulltime artist since 1985. His commissions include redesigning the Monumen Pahlawan Perak and the door of Masjid Pekan in Pahang. He had featured in major exhibitions such as the RUPA Malaysia in London in 1999 and the 50th Years Merdeka exhibition.

    • Mad Anuar Ismail (b. Terengganu, 1952) The Storm Rider Series
      Nov. 06, 2022

Mad Anuar Ismail (b. Terengganu, 1952) The Storm Rider Series

      Est: RM40,000 - RM70,000

Row furiously and steadfastly as the waves crest and droop. It requires strength, agility and guile in order to overcome the obstacles and to survive. The oars are dramatically tilted upwards and forward, thrusting into the air to jolt the viewer's space, before they dip into the raging waters to get momentum. This is Mad Anuar Ismail's defining Storm Rider (Perentas Ribut) series harking to his childhood observation and admiration of the daily perils faced by fishermen in his hometown in Dungun, Terengganu, as they set out in the South China Sea. It's a tough and dangerous way of making a living, but that's the resilience of the human spirit. It has become Mad Anuar's calling card, apart from his other series related to his Malay world like Pahlawan, Belangkas, Meditasi and Pemain Rebat. Mad Anuar works in wood and welded steel. Mad Anuar Ismail celebrated his 40 years of sculpting with his first solo, Getaran at White Box, Publika, Kuala Lumpur, in August 2017. Organised by Fergana Art, it put him among the pantheons of Malaysian sculpture though he had featured in several group exhibitions including the international RUPA Malaysia in London in 1999. He was also featured in the 50th Years Merdeka exhibition. His major commissions include the redesigning of the Monumen Pahlawan Perak and the door of Masjid Pekan in Pahang. He received his BFA at the Mara Institute of Technology in 1977, and worked as a set cum graphic designer with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture in the 1980s.

Mad Anuar Ismail (b. Terengganu, 1952) Siri Pahlawan No. 4, 2009

      Est: RM65,000 - RM100,000

Mad Anuar Ismail is one of the early sculptors in Malaysia and was a member of the Anak Alam collective in the 1970s. The heroic sculpture embodies important elements of Mad Anuar’s works, creating a stark visual effect combing traditional and local motifs. Mad Anuar’s artistic concept is said to revolve around combining formalism with eastern aesthetics as well as creating forms to reflect his idea of “reaffirming identities within the context of post-modernism”. Mad Anuar graduated with a Bachelor’s in fine arts from MARA Institute of Technology, Shah Alam in 1977. He is a prominent sculptor who has exhibited widely, both in Malaysia and internationally. His exhibitions include Al Fahn – The Contemporary Art from Islamic influenced countries (Germany, 1995), Pameran Rupa Malaysia (London, 1999), Pameran 50 Tahun Merdeka, Muzium Kesenian Islam (Kuala Lumpur, 2007), 24th Asean International Arts exhibition, Balai Seni Lukis Negara (2010) and For The Imaginary Space (selected sculpture & installation from the Pakhruddin & Fatimah Sulaiman Collection), The Edge Galerie, 2014. Mad Anuar works predominantly with woodcarving and steel welding. His bold yet introspective works celebrate traditional aesthetics whilst exploring new entry points, perspectives and visual vocabulary. His solo exhibition entitled Getaran organised by Fergana Art was exhibited at White Box, Publika in 2017.
