Gershon Iskowitz Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer, Etcher, b. 1921 - d. 1988

Gershon Iskowitz (November 21, 1921 – January 26, 1988) was a Canadian artist of Jewish background originally from Poland. Iskowitz was a Holocaust survivor of the Kielce Ghetto, who was liberated at Buchenwald. The circumstances of his early life—the trauma of the Holocaust and the uncertainty of the immediate postwar period, followed by immigration and adaptation to Canada—provide a lens through which to understand and appreciate his work.[1] His early figurative images represent his tragic observed and remembered experiences while his later luminous abstract works represent his own unique vision of the world.[2] Iskowitz's work does not easily fit into contemporary schools and movements, but it has been characterized as hard-edge, minimalist, abstract expressionist, and action painting.

Iskowitz was born in Kielce, in the Second Polish Republic.[4] His father was Shmiel Yankl, generally referred to as Jankel; his mother was Zisla Lewis. Gershon was the third of four children; he had two brothers, Itchen and Yosl, and a younger sister, Devorah.[5] At the age of four he was sent to the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva. He became bored and began drawing. After a year and a half he begged his father to be allowed to return home and was given permission to do so. He was tutored in Polish and placed in a public school. After two and a half years his father set up a small studio area for him in their home and allowed him to spend his time drawing and painting. At the age of nine he exchanged original art posters for free admission to a local cinema.

He was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1939 and arranged to live with an uncle in the city, but a few days later, the German Army invaded the city and Iskowitz returned to Kielce. The Nazi persecution of the country’s Jewish population began almost immediately. On March 31, 1941, the occupying forces established the Kielce Ghetto, a few square blocks surrounded by barbed-wire-topped walls and locked gates. The Iskowitz family and all the other Jews in the city were forced to live there. They were soon joined by Jews transported from elsewhere in Poland for “containment,” and by August 1942, more than 25,000 people were jammed into this squalid area.[7] In September 1943 the Kielce Ghetto was burned. Gershon and his brother, Yosl, were sent to Auschwitz.[8]

Gershon painted or drew at night only after every one else was asleep. He said "Why did I do it? I think it kept me alive. There was nothing to do. I had to do something in order to forget the hunger. It's very hard to explain, but in the camp painting was a necessity for survival."[9] He was transferred to Buchenwald in the fall of 1944. Near the end of the war he tried to escape but was seriously wounded. After the April 11 liberation of Buchenwald he was sent to recuperate in hospitals for about nine months.

From January to May 1947 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and had private study with Oskar Kokoschka who painted in an intense expressionistic style.

BLUE RED-C, 1980 oil on canvas signed, titled, and dated on the reverse 45 ins x 40 ins; 114.3 cms x 101.6 cms Provenance: Artist’s Studio, Gershon Iskowitz Foundation Gershon Iskowitz’s art was forever changed after a 1967 Canada Council grant allowed him to charter an aircraft to fly over the sub-Arctic landscape and the coast of Hudson Bay. His most iconic paintings have roots in this episode, and channel both the literal vision and ephemeral sensation of catching fleeting glimpses of the ground through gaps in the cloudscape. In 1975, Iskowitz explained: “People say, oh, Gershon Iskowitz is an abstract artist…But it’s a whole realistic world…the experience, out in the field, of looking up in the trees or in the sky, of looking down from the height of a helicopter. So what you do is try to make a composition of all those things, make some kind of reality: like the trees should belong to the sky, and the ground should belong to the trees, and the ground should belong to the sky. Everything has to be united.” In a year when we are all so strongly tethered to the terrestrial realm, unable to board flights, the impression of broad skies and uninhibited flight feels especially poignant, and beckons strongly. Imagine Iskowitz, given the gift of zooming up and above his surroundings, of seeing the familiar made new and almost alien. Many of us cannot remember our first trip in an airplane, and take for granted that startling moment when we slip the surly bonds of earth and gain the perspective of birds, of the heavens themselves. Iskowitz’s paintings remind us of the marvel of the skies, and how sublime that experience of the infinite can be. Joan Murray, Canadian Art in the Twentieth Century, Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1999, page 133.Born in a small city in Poland, Gershon Iskowitz (1921-1988) immigrated to Canada in 1949. A survivor of the Holocaust, he remained haunted by unspeakable memories until the early 1950s, and his work from this earlier period shows him struggling with such themes in vivid, traumatic detail. In 1967, however, he received a Canada Council for the Arts travel grant that allowed him to hire a helicopter and fly from Winnipeg to Churchill. Having never before seen the landscape from above, Iskowitz was moved and inspired, and this momentous journey would inform the rest of his practice. Colour became paramount to his work, and he began favouring abstraction over representational form. Iskowitz had realized the transcendent power of art. Chosen to represent Canada at the 1972 Venice Biennale, Iskowitz and his work were regarded as the embodiment of the triumph of light over darkness. Autumn-H is the eighth work in the extended Autumn series. Here, colours erupt onto the canvas with radiant joy. By the 1980s, Iskowitz was electrifying his compositions, adding intensity to his contrasts and sharpening the delineation of form. In 1982, the year this work was painted, Gershon Iskowitz was given a major one-man retrospective exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Curated by David Burnett, the show then travelled to the art galleries of Windsor, Montreal, London, Calgary and to Canada House in London, England.Estimate: $25,000–30,000

Hailing from the early 1980s Night series when the expressive potential of colour was employed in lively compositions of serpentine forms, singular dabs of bright pigment and a patterned ground of mottled colour, Night Reds-A is memorable for its inspired mood bordering on the ecstatic. A confident assertion by a painter who then was only a year away from a forty year retrospective (1982) organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario. Iskowitz would tour to five other Canadian cities and Canada House Gallery, London, England.By the time the Night Reds-A was completed - painted as all works were at night in his Toronto Spadina Avenue studio – the basic elements of his signature style had been established. These included patches of floating colour converging, coalescing and drifting apart in compositions often compared to “the sensation of looking through a shifting surface of clouds at colours and lights below.” This according to Calgary Herald art critic Nancy Tousley writing in response to the artist’s AGO retrospective. Of course, the inspiration for all of this was Iskowitz’s bi-annual flights over the vastness of the Northwest Territories, James Bay and Churchill: begun in 1968 with the help of a Canada Council grant. The result was the development of a kind of dematerialized landscape, which transcended its formalist and abstract language of colour, shape and light into a highly personal and independent vision of Canada’s northern terrain. As a second-generation Toronto abstractionist, his oils and watercolours also surprised because they were far from the icier and starker interpretations in Canadian art such as Lawren Harris or even A.Y. Jackson.Iskowitz was a cross-over figure in Canadian art who perhaps found some sort of salvation in the Canadian landscape after a bleaker period of art in the 1950s which drew upon the Polish-born artist’s six long years in German concentration camps. He gave back to his new homeland not only with works like Night Reds-A but also with the Gershon Iskowitz Prize – one of the most important visual art prizes in Canada.Estimate: $40,000–50,000

Occasionally, Iskowitz’s focus shifted upward to the sky. Here Iskowitz has rendered the subject distinct and separate from the earth below, that is, without an obvious horizon. While some viewers may see a lake, shoreline and night sky, others take the view that this painting is entirely sky - the angle of attack being much steeper than a traditional two-thirds sky/one-third land composition. Either way, colour and texture are purposefully controlled and sensation, not topography or astronomy, seems to be the central concern. In Untitled, 1961, whispy streaks of orange, putty and blue evoke something delightfully dizzying, a sonnet to the sky at dusk. Humans gaze upward for salvation (from a god) or for information (in way finding). Perhaps Iskowitz, who had been victimized by the Second World War, found answers to his own questions here, too. Robert Fulford refers to Iskowitz’s landscapes as “gentle poetry,” affirming Iskowitz’s works as, “a poet-painter’s love poem to the spacious freedom of Canada’s land, water-ways and skies.”Estimate: $15,000–20,000

GERSHON ISKOWITZ, R.C.A.SUMMER PAINTING #2, 1972acrylic on canvassigned and titled on the reverse 44 ins x 32 ins; 111.8 cms x 81.3 cms Provenance:Gallery Moos Ltd., TorontoPrivate Collection, TorontoLiterature:Roald Nasgaard, “Toronto: The Second Generation, 1960s,” in Abstract Painting in Canada, Douglas & McIntyre and Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Vancouver and Halifax, 2007, page 244.Roald Nasgaard, “Gershon Iskowitz,” in The Gershon Iskowitz Prize 1986 to 2006, Laurel MacMillan, (ed.), Library and Archives Canada and The Gershon Iskowitz Foundation, Toronto and Ottawa, 2009, pages 9 and 12.Note:When asked why he painted, Gershon Iskowitz replied simply “I needed it for my sanity;” a necessity that was precipitated by his experience in the Nazi concentration camps at Dachau during the Second World War. Liberated by the Americans in 1944, Iskowitz managed to survive internment and in 1949 emigrated to Toronto. The rest of his family were killed however, and the horrors of this and other painful Holocaust memories continued to haunt his work and life after his move to Canada. Iskowitz gradually turned to landscape painting in the early 1950s and after receiving a Canada Council travel grant in 1967, he organized a helicopter ride from Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba. This is often cited as a seminal moment in Iskowitz’s career, as after this trip new colour arrangements and spatial patterns began to emerge in his work. The last remaining signs of representational form can be seen in his works from 1972, with subsequent paintings being purely abstract in form and content. The Summer Painting from 1972 is indicative of this transitional period in his career. The bright blue background both grounds the piece with a sense of lightheartedness and serves to balance the fervor of the irregular shapes which accent the painting. When combined, the abstract forms conjure the dreamy qualities of summer, with the lush possibilities of summer nights being hinted at by the touches of grey. The German philosopher Theodor W. Adorno’s oft-quoted phrase that “to write lyric poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric” is salient in the ongoing critique of Iskowitz’s work. A common interpretation of his work follows that his use of bright, electric colours and abstracted landscape imagery is his method of psychological and emotional healing. Yet his response to the controversy surrounding a Holocaust film complicates this reading. He stated that “if you showed it the way it really was, you wouldn’t be able to watch it for a second.” His work can thus be understood as an attempt at confronting the paradox of artistic representation: that is the tense negotiation that exists between aesthetic pleasure and the reality of the events being depicted.Chosen to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1972, his paintings illustrate a colourful and jubilant Canada. Portraying an image in which dread and darkness have been subsumed by brightness and hope; a radical idea considering the grim political climate of the time. Summer Painting is a painting of summer, a painting of Iskowitz’s tragic past, a painting of the wars, strife and conflict that coloured the year of 1972, it is a painting that reminds viewers that while it celebrates the art of painting, it also celebrates the promise of life.

Despite his rise in popularity overseas, the artist had much to prove. He traveled to Yellowknife in 1973, where he was inspired to combine the elements of colour and space. A tension was created within works like ""Highlands in Orange"" #1 - Adele Freedman writes that he "reduced the number of dots on the canvas from tumultuous torrent to minor flurries." Freedman also commented that Iskowitz "became fascinated with the qualities of orange" after this and continued to work by layering patterns, colours and shapes, referring to his vision of the landscape. Between 1974 and 1977, Iskowitz was selected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy and awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal. After Iskowitz's successful one-man show at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York, critic David Shirey of the New York Times commended him as "extremely gifted in selecting and arranging lyrically beautiful colours that coalesce into a radiant composition." ""Highlands in Orange"" #1 is a perfect example of such a work.
