A SUPERB 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD TOKYO SCHOOL OKIMONO depicting a seated ape holding aloft a falling snail, exceptionally modelled with one hand raised and the other resting, upon a burr wood base. Ivory 7ins x 5ins. Note: Ishikawa Komei is widely regarded as the finest master carver working in Japan, appointed as an artist to the imperial household in 1890.

      Meiji period (late 19th century), with seal Hondo gishiin Ishikawa Komei [Ishikawa Komei (1852-1913)] Cast as seated guardians with fierce expressions, their mouths forming the mantra syllables ah and um, their manes and tails with thick curls, the entire surface gilded; with seal on base of each 13in. (33cm.) high each (2) NOTES Ishikawa Komei is considered one of the best carvers in the new Western style. Trained also as a painter in the Kano style he later became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and he was appointed to the prestigious role of imperial artist. He co-founded the Kankokai Craft Company with sculptor Kaneda Kenjiro in 1877. His work in metal casting is rare. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note the seal is read as "Teishitsu gigeiin Ishikawa Komei".

      Signed Komei (Ishikawa Komei of Tokyo, 1852-1913), Meiji Period (Late 19th Century) Katabori, ivory; a lively study of a chubby Japanese toddler dressed in a coat tied at the back in a large bow, sitting on the ground supporting his weight on his left hand, his right hand holding up a doll representing Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, the himotoshi formed by a large and a small hole in the base on either side of part of the bow tying his coat, signed with incised and stained characters on the hem of the coat by his left foot Komei 1 7/8 x 1 9/16in. (4.6 x 3.9 cm.) NOTES For an example of a standard-sized figure of a child playing with the face handled in a very similar manner, by Yoshida Homei (a pupil of Komei), see Joe Earle, Splendors of Imperial Japan, Masterpieces of the Meiji Period from the Khalili Collection (London, 2002), cat. no. 276.
