        A unique lot includes the first cover of The New Yorker Magazine, February 26, 1990, by Rea Irvin (American, 1881-1972).The painting was made according to a well known engraving, which depicted the Comte dOrsay, a Frenchman who lived in England. This gentleman received the fictitious name of Eustas Tilley, which was invented for him by the American comedian Corey Ford. The lot of two ink drawings by Austin Briggs (1909-1973) are both signed and one is dated 1928. various sizes 5.5 x 7.5 in to 8.5 x 10.5 in.Rea Irvin studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute before helping launch and work at the New Yorker as an illustrator and (first) art editor, later rising to art director. Irvin helped to define that publication with images that were witty and culturally aware, with trembly outlines and poached eyes. He also contributed to Life and Cosmopolitan magazines starting at age 25. He created hundreds of illustrations, 169 covers, layout, design, and the sharp-casual Irvin type font. This small collection of enhanced drawings by Rea Irvin contains a range of leisurely subjects: vacationing, golfing, the theater, the art museum, the dinner, and one obscure scene with a flapper and a neanderthal man. These illustrations were created some time around the Jazz Age and reflect the trends and hobbies of the time in dynamic compositions that capture gesture and emotion so effortlessly.

Based on a caricature of the Count d'Orsay from 1834, Irvin dubbed the dandy Eustace Tilley, and he would go on to appear in a series of stories the following August. He remains the magazine's beloved mascot.
