Westminster Abbey.- Ireland (John, 1761-1842, Dean of Westminster Abbey) Indenture signed between the Very Reverend John Ireland the Dean of Westminster and Dr John Soper, manuscript in English on vellum, 7th September, 1836; and a conveyance signed and sealed between the Very Reverend John Ireland the Dean of Westminster and Edwarde Tucker, v.s. (2) *** Ireland was installed as Dean of Westminster Abbey in February 1816. In addition, he was Dean of the Order of the Bath and rector of Islip, Oxfordshire. As Dean, he had the right of carrying the crown at the coronation service; he did so in 1821 for George IV and in 1831 for William IV. He was too ill for this role in 1838, when Victoria was crowned, and his place was taken by the subdean. Ireland remained Dean of Westminster until his death in 1842.
