Osuitok Ipeelee Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1923 - d. 2005

Osuitok Ipeelee (23 September 1923 Neeouleeutalik camp-2005 Cape Dorset) was an Inuk sculptor who lived in Cape Dorset, Nunavut. His sculptures in green soapstone of caribou and birds are particularly esteemed for their balance and delicacy. He was an early collaborator with James Archibald Houston, and by Houston's account was instrumental in the conception of the West Baffin Island Eskimo Cooperative. He was also one of the witnesses of the last-remembered traditional Inuit trial.

Ipeelee grew up in a traditional Inuit environment, learning to hunt and fish from his father, Ohotok Ipeelee, at a small camp near Cape Dorset. Ohotok also taught his son how to carve ivory, and as early as the age of thirteen Osuitok began to sculpt. This was encouraged by Roman Catholic missionaries, who bought carvings and commissioned small crucifixes from him. The artist's earliest extant works are ivory miniatures of hunting equipment, typical of the historic period of Inuit art, that date from the 1940s.

Take a moment to appreciate the delicate spindles of the weasel’s hindlegs, or the slender arcs of the owl’s talons. Osuitok has explained that he works on the finest details last—but picture those final moments! Imagine the ultimate success or failure of many hours of precise labour hinging on the ability to balance restraint and daring, to anticipate disaster, to see through stone. To look at this sculpture is to see the precariousness of both material and subject. Predator and prey are connected in a moment of extreme violence, yet there is something almost sensual about the embrace. They form two halves of a circle, curving in and away from each other in a moment of both tension and grace. Osuitok has balanced this drama atop the tiniest base, allowing the scene to appear nearly weightless—no small feat for a sculptor of stone. Estimate: $7,000—10,000

Having grown up traditionally with a family of artists, Osuitok groomed a deep understanding of the behavior of stone, where it fractures and breaks. He became known as “keeper of the carving stone” and a guide and teacher for other artists. It is with this profound understanding of stone that allows him to carve with such delicacy and grace. Osuitok once noted about carving, “you have to really know how it’s going to work; if you don’t you are going to end up with a problem”. Known for his innovative and original techniques, Osuitok loved trying different ways of playing with the space and balance around his stone. His birds are particular to balancing acts, often being predominantly top heavy, the birds are skillfully balanced on fine points, as in this lot. Additionally, Osuitok has chosen to utilize the space around the sculpture to achieve a more two dimensional effect. The sculpture is almost flat, resulting in an attractive silhouette of a mighty, proud hawk.Estimate: $22,000—26,000

An example of their creative methods and the experimental nature of the project was the use of James Houston’s shaving brush as a stencil brush in the creation of what later became this iconic image. The technique of blending the colours through the stencil provided a softer effect than the use of a roller to apply colour. Osuitok had been incising on tusks before he met James Houston. He was integral to the start of the print making program in Cape Dorset but contributed just two prints to the 1959 collection. Although Osuitok had a history of creating graphic art, he gravitated strongly towards carving and became much celebrated for his incredible sculptural work.

One of the characteristics that Osuitok has chosen to emphasize in this example is the creature’s mass, the other is a long tail, much longer than is typical of an actual musk ox. Osuitok is perhaps most celebrated for his depiction of wildlife taking liberty with his subjects, combining animal and human forms and experimenting with these combinations. Another noticeable aspect of this work is the lolling tongue of the musk ox. This is likely an added element of humour, however one could imagine this burly musk ox has outrun a determined predator and is now panting with its tongue out. Or perhaps the animal, which is the largest grazing mammal of the Arctic, is simply foraging for food.
