▲ Callum Innes (b.1962) 'Exposed Painting, Cadmium Red Pale No 2', 1993 signed and dated 'C Innes 93' verso, oil on canvas 110 x 100cm, unframed Provenance: With Frith Street Gallery, London. Condition Report: Light surface dust and dirt. This is most noticable on the right side (red paint) and does not easily wipe off, please see additional condition imaages. On close inspection there is very small, faint circular impact mark to the upper left edge however in our opinion this is not distracting and overall the paint appears to be stable. Examined under UV light a small dot fluoresces at the bottom of the extreme left edge corresponding to a small raised spot of white paint. There is red paint on the left edge of the canvas visible when viewed from the side.

    Callum Innes,  Untitled No.116, 2009

    Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Callum Innes,  Scottish b.1962 -  Untitled No.116, 2009;    oil on canvas, 160 x 156 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  with Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (according to a copy of the original invoice);  private collection, UK, purchased from the above  Note:  Innes is one of the most important British painters working today, his cool minimalist style instantly recognisable. This is a brilliant example of his mature work, with its two opposing fields of deep colour and empty space, made by a gradual process of addition and subtraction. The artist has exhibited with Ingleby Gallery since 1999 and in had a major show at the gallery in 2009 when this work was made.  The artist was nominated for the Turner and Jerwood Prizes in 1995, winning the latter in 2002 and his works are in major collections including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Kunsthaus Zurich and the Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art. 2024 has already seen exhibitions for the artist in the UK, Italy and the USA, as well as a museum show at Kode–Lysverket Museum in Bergen 'Cadmium Orange, Red Violet, Lamp Black' demonstrating his continued influence on the language of contemporary painting.

CALLUM INNES (Edinburgh 1962–lives and works in Edinburgh) Exposed Painting. Paynes Grey / Charcoal on White. 1998. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the overlap: Innes. 98, as well as with the work number on the stretcher: CI 98 31. 87.5 × 80.5 cm. Provenance: - Galerie Bob van Orsouw, Zurich (verso with the label). - Purchased from the above by the previous owner in 1998, private collection Switzerland. - By desent to the present owner, private collection Switzerland. Callum Innes is probably one of the best-known artists in Great Britain today. From the nineties onwards, he worked in parallel on a dozen different series. The most extensive series is entitled "Exposed Painting", which he began in 1992 and which he is still developing today. His picture supports are mainly paper or canvas, which are primed with white paint. He divides these geometrically into different and unequal horizontal and vertical zones by applying monochrome areas of oil paint across the entire width. Before the oil paint dries, he wipes away part of the surface with turpentine, a liquid solvent for oil paint. This creates a veil-like, shimmering, almost transparent layer of colour, which gives a hint of the former colour pigments and at the same time brings out new pigments. Callum Innes mixes his oil colours himself, in which black tones dominate, but also red, violet, and olive tones are intermingled. Our present painting "Exposed Painting" from 1998 has as its focus a solid black horizontal beam, which is interrupted by the diffuse light grey veil of colour which is traced vertically. The turpentine has revealed a light mist of black pigments, or more precisely, the black paint has been "Exposed", visibly exposed. This particular technique of addition and subtraction, of putting on and taking off, of adding and taking away, of opening and closing, of the diaphanous and the opaque, is what the artist calls "unpaint". A disciplined monochrome painting that produces uncertain results and constantly obliges the painter to discover, question and renew the technique he has developed. --------------- CALLUM INNES (Edinburgh 1962–lebt und arbeitet in Edinburgh) Exposed Painting. Paynes Grey / Charcoal on White. 1998. ---------------

§ CALLUM INNES (SCOTTISH 1962-) EXPOSED PAINTING, PAYNES GREY / COBALT, 1995 Signed and dated '95 stretcher verso, further inscribed 'To Jimmy, Happy Birthday, 17.02.00, Love Callum' to stretcher verso, oil on canvas (175cm x 165cm (69in x 65in)) Footnote: Exhibited: Frith Street Gallery, London, 1995 Note: Lyon & Turnbull are delighted to offer Callum Innes’ ‘Exposed Painting, Paynes Grey / Cobalt’ for sale. Not only does this work date from that pivotal year of recognition for the artist, 1995, it is from his famed ‘Exposed Paintings’ series, a body of work which cemented his reputation and remains the lynchpin of his oeuvre. His Exposed Paintings exemplify what has been described as Innes’ “painting and un-painting” technique. The works embody balance and tension: between the application and subtraction of materials, between simplicity and complexity, between meticulous technique and serendipitous outcomes. Painted in the typical large format that characterises this series (apparently selected as it is the span of the artist’s arm), it features a block of pure highly saturated blue, the striations of Innes’ gestural brushwork visible upon scrutiny. The year 1995 saw the artist meditate on the minimalistic juxtaposition of just two tonal fields, in this case Paynes Grey and Cobalt Blue, meeting in a feathery, bleeding intersection. Though graphic, indeed almost stark, nothing is ever quite what it first seems with a work by Innes. “Everything that pertains to be minimal of course is not,” he once commented. “The way the eye works, it goes to the painted area, then the white, then the feathering. Something simple becomes complex.” Callum Innes is recognised as one of the UK’s foremost contemporary painters as supported by his highly regarded international reputation. A graduate of Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, and the Edinburgh College of Art, his work earned high regard from an early stage in his career. In 1992, the artist was the recipient of two major exhibitions in significant public institutions: the ICA, London, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. In 1995 Innes was shortlisted for the Turner Prize and Jerwood Painting Prize. In 1998 he won the prestigious NatWest Art Prize and in 2002 was awarded the Jerwood Painting Prize and the Artisti Invitati Al Premio Internazionale. Innes has had numerous solo shows around the world, and his work his held in major collections including Tate, London, and the Guggenheim, New York.
