    UTAGAWA KUNIYASU (1794-1832) AND IKEDA EISEN (1790-1848) Two Woodblock Prints Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century The first, an ōban tate-e print titled Shinkigunshi Shubu no mitate (Parody of Zhu Wu, the Divine Strategist), depicting the courtesan Hanaōgi of the Ōgiya, from the series Tsūzoku Suikoden gōketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori (108 Heroes of the Popular Shuihuzhuan), signed Ippōsai Kuniyasu ga, published by Kagaya Kichiemon; the second an ōban yoko-e print titled Uki-e Kabuki ōshibai no zu (Perspective Picture of the Play Shibaraku at a Major Theater), signed Eisen ga, published by Kawaguchi Uhei 14 7/8 x 9 5/8in (37.6 x 25.3cm), the largest (2).

    IKEDA EISEN (1790 -1848): IWAMURATA By Ikeda Eisen, (1790 -1848), signed Japan, c. 1835-1838 Color woodblock print on paper. Horizontal Oban. Depicting blind men fighting. No. 23 from the series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido (Kiso dôchû). Published by Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeidô). Mounted at the upper margin to a passepartout. Condition: Good condition, slightly faded colors, minor browning, and staining. Creasing along the centerfold. Provenance: German private collection. The passepartout with an old stamp ‘ORIGINAL PRINT Guarantee by Sakai & Co., Established 1874’. Dimensions: Image size 25.5 x 36.5 cm, Size incl. passepartout 36 x 48 cm Keisai Eisen (1790–1848), was a notable Edo period artist, he developed his own style under the mentorship of Kanō Hakkeisai and Kikugawa Eizan. He created surimono, erotic prints, and landscapes, including The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaidō. Eisen gained fame for his bijin-ga, portraying women with a sensual charm. He also wrote biographies, including one on the Forty-seven Ronin, and contributed to the Ukiyo-e Ruiko. Literature comparison: A near identical print is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, accession number 21.4813.
