Carefully modelled with refine strokes, it is hatched with dark shades that creates an impression of three dimensionality. Focusing on the rapid movements of the figures, it reveals the technique of physical combat consisting of complex tactics. Raja Azhar Idris (b. 1952) Nude, 1979

        Est: RM40,000 - RM65,000

Few know about Raja Azhar’s preoccupation with Realism in his early years in Australia. It was in 1979, in his first year at the Victoria College of the Art in Melbourne (graduating in 1981). This work shows his sleek skills, combining a female nude and a still-life, playing on patterns and design. A somnambulist spirit prevails as the woman is stretched on a mattress with striped and floral bedsheets, against a backdrop of a red floral design. On the left, cutting off her lower torso perhaps to conceal, a still-life of a potted plant with ramrod stems is put on a wooden pedestal, with the lower third dominated by a red-and-white veneer. It is reminiscent of the style and subject of American Pop artist Tom Wesselmann, known for his Great American Nude. Raja Azhar also taught art classes at the Caulfield Arts Centre for eight years, to help finance his education. Raja Azhar Idris is a versatile artist being adept at drawings, oil, acrylic, printmaking, batik, watercolours and sculptural glass. He is also into conservation painting. He had a gallery called Raya in Melbourne, and on his return to Malaysia after 14 years there, set up Art Case Galleries in 1992. His first solo was a batik exhibition in 1976. He excelled early winning several art awards like the St Kilda competition in 1980 and 1981, the Lord Mayor’s Prize in Melbourne in 1981, the Victorian Artists Society’s Artist of the Year Award, the Gippsland Miniature Art Prize (1982), the Rotary Club of St Kilda Prize (1983) and the Greyhound Prize (1989).

RAJA AZHAR IDRIS (b. 1952) Alvin Ailey Dance - Revelation, 1993

        Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

It's not surprising that Raja Azhar Idris had chosen dance as one of his manifold themes in his artistic oeuvre, as he had also been a dancer in his own dance troupe called Australian Contemporary Dance Company when he was in Melbourne. Raja Azhar was interested in capturing movement and momentum of this obviously modern dance, with the skirts billowing as the pace hit uptempo. He had also painted the more traditional Mak Yong. This work was done in 1993, a year after Raja Azhar decided to return for good to Malaysia after spending a decade in Melbourne, Australia, where he studied and eventually ran an art gallery, Raya. On his return, he set up the Art Case Galleries. Raja Azhar Idris graduated with a degree in Fine Art from the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, in 1981, the year when he won the Melbourne Lord Mayor's Prize, and was voted the Artist of the Year by the Victorian Artists Society. He won the Miniature Gippland Prize in 1982 and the Rotary Club of St Kilda Art Prize in 1983, and the VCA's Elizabeth Murdoch travelling fellowship in 1985. In 1989, he was awarded the Greyhound Art Prize. Apart from acrylic, oil and watercolours, Raja Azhar had also done batik, etchings and sculptures in metal and glass. His first batik solo was in Kuala Lumpur and Paris in 1976. He performed painting live on stage in the Malam Karyawan at the Shah Alam stadium. Since taking up glass sculpture in 1999, he has had several major commissions including the Tree Of Life, measuring 38 feet by 36 feet by 60 feet (365 pieces) at the Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur.

        Est: RM10,000 - RM15,000

Raja Azhar Idris returned to Malaysia for good in 1992, after spending 14 years in Melbourne, Australia, as an artist-gallerist. It was back to the vagaries of the tropical weather of stifling afternoon heat and lashing thunderstorms and drizzles. It was one such scene where he saw everything in liquefied mode from the glass panel/window that drove him to paint such images, which also double as a metaphor of today's realityand life: impermanent, inconstant and ever changing. In Australia, Raja Azhar set up his gallery under his own name, and also took up art-conservation. He graduated with a degree in Fine Arts at the Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne in 1981. It was at a time that Raja Azhar was on a roll, winning the St Kilda art competition in 1980-81, the Melbourne Lord Mayor's Prize in 1981, the Gippsland Art Prize (1982), the Royal Club of St Kilda Prize (1983), the Greyhound Art Prize (1979) and the Victoria Art Society's Artist of the Year Award. On his return, he set up Art Case Galleries.
