Warm, brown tones dominate this expressive portrait of a man by M. Zain. Painted using a realist approach, the image is enhanced by the play of light and shadows. The treatment of the background made up of gestural forms, combined with the loose brushwork of the shirt conveys the emotion of the sitter. Though little is known about M. Zain Idris, he was a rare State artist appointed by the Terengganu State Government. The Chief Minister afforded him a studio and residence in Kuala Terengganu, complete with a stipend. As an artist, he was driven by a wanderlust, and often travelled outside the State to paint, Kelantan and even as as far as Kuala Lumpur. Dubbed the Fisherman Artist, Zain had become a full time artist after he was discovered by the pioneer gallerist, art critic cum promoter Frank Sullivan, who even gave him a solo at his Samat Art Gallery. Sullivan was then Press Secretary to Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaya's first prime minister. He had a joint exhibition with Kasim Abas at the Equatorial Hotel KL in 1984, and at the Shangri-La Hotel KL in 1987.

Mohd Zain Idris excelled at portraying the vast landscapes of the region, characterised by rich textures of paint. The subtle play of light and soft colour range of neutral beige tones, light blue and deep green, gives a soothing charm to the landscape by the beach. Fishing boats are being kept and stored by a team of men. The wide expanse of shore conveys the breadth of the landscape. Though little is known about M. The artist focused on the fishing harbour and its surrounding coast lines, highlighting the livelihood of the fishermen at sea. Memories of a peaceful home (home sweet home) is expressed in this composition featuring a serene landscape. The artist frames the composition with ascending trees, revealing in the forest interior a wooden house, resided by the elderly. Mohd Zain's earthy palette and refined brushwork make it an ideal depiction of rural living. Though little is known about M. In this atmospheric landscape, Mohd Zain Idris depicts the complex process of tin mining methods and labour, involving the process of gravel pump mining. The tall wooden scaffolding is deftly illustrated in the background. Combined with muted colours in the foreground, the scene depicts the use of high-pressure water jets to break down ore bearing ground. Though little is known about M. What a pastoral scene filled with nostalgia, of villagers in a sunlit forest interior flanked by trees, and with verdant hills in the backdrop. Mohd Zain Idris, or better known as M. Zain, was acclaimed for his atmospheric landscapes. The row of dark trees on the left foreground creates a partial frame which leads the eye into the composition. The smokes give additional effect. M. Zain is best known as the rare 'State artist' appointed by the Terengganu Menteri Besar and given his own studio cum residence in Kuala Terengganu, complete with a stipend. The moon that shines bright lightens up the whole scenery leaving a sense of coolness as the night slowly creeps in. Although we were absent, we could almost feel the cold and hear crickets throughout the night. The artist brilliantly uses hues of blue to create a serene night mode that we all desire. This is indeed a beautiful rendition of a typical village scene. People usually burn dried coconut leafs, twigs, and unwanted old goods to dispose it. A thick smoke can be seen filling up the air using fine impasto technique and the same technique applied to the whole piece. The lush green forest in the background suggested the house is located far in the outskirts where activities like this are common to people staying there. Though little is known about M. The hard life of fishermen was something close to artist M. Zain’s heart, for he had experienced it himself. This magical oil beachscape shows his deft handling of colours and play of light, and here a brilliant composition of a distant light from a strategic cloudburst against an azure sky, framed by the mood-inducing slanting long trunks of the coconut trees, shunting part of a ramshackled hutment of the fishermen to the far right. Now you know why he was a favourite painting partner of Khalil Ibrahim. Though little is known about M. Zain Idris, he was a rare State artist appointed by the Terengganu State Government. Mohamed Zain was a self-taught artist with the greatest admiration for the village life, and he highly cherished it. He was touted as the “Fisherman’s Artist” by Frank Sullivan, during his first solo at the Samat Art Gallery in 1972 and was known for depicting landscape of the seaside and fishermen villages. Kampungs are the panoramas of the charming scenes of nature. There is a simplistic and divine beauty about these sceneries and artist Mohamed Zain captures it brilliantly in this piece. All in all, this piece is filled with romanticism and dazzling execution.

Mohd Zain Idris is truly an accomplished watercolourist with the same pedigree as his painting buddy, Khalil Ibrahim. This watercolour of a kampung scene best attests to his accomplished skills with the subdued hues of light, the sound draftsmanship of the simple kampung houses, the textures of the tree trunks and fronds, the shriveled frond on the ground, and the figure of a mother using the umbrella to shield the baby she is carrying with another child in tow making their way back to their home. What a bucolic scene filled with nostalgia, of a farmer, hoe over his shoulder, in his paddy field probably of approaching dusk flanked by trees, and with a hill in the backdrop. The sky and the fields are of the same ochre hues indicating much to be done. Although done in 1971, this work could well be set in the 1950s when Malaya was still frontier land and the economy agrarian. Mohd Zain Idris, or better known as M.
