Color spit bite aquatint with aquatint, drypoint and soft ground etching printed on gampi paper chine collé Japan, 1984 Shoichi Ida (1941-2006) – Japanese artist ‘Between Vertical and Horizon San Pablo Avenue, No. 6’ Signed, titled and dated in pencil, numbered ‘1/25’ Published by Crown Point Press, California with their blind stamp lower right Printed by Hidekatsu Takada at Crown Point Press, California Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Kathan Brown, director of Crown Point Press Image dimensions: 10 ¼ x 6 in. (26 x 15.2 cm.) Sheet dimensions: 20 ¼ x 18 in. (51.4 x 45.7 cm.) Very good condition Estimate $500-$1,000 In an exploration of space, this print by Japanese artist Shoichi Ida creates a point of contact between the vertical and horizon. Using a multitude of etching techniques, the result is ephemeral and meditative, with the artist’s thumbprints scattered across the plate to create an autobiographical horizon. Shoichi Ida (Japanese, 1941-2006) Born in Kyoto, Japan, Shoichi Ida studied at the Kyoto Municipal University of Art. After graduating, Ida received a grant in 1968 from the French government to live and work in Paris. He also lived briefly in New York and San Francisco, which influenced his art by melding Eastern traditions with materials common to Western Minimalism. Best known as a paper artist and printmaker, working in Japan and with Crown Point Press between 1984 and 1992. In 1986, Ida was honored with an Award for Excellent in International Cultural Exchange from the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 1989 he was awarded the Suntory Prize in Japan. His works can be found in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
