Suzlee Ibrahim (b. 1967) Sakura Series: Pink Lady, 2006

          Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

Suzlee Ibrahim has done several memorable series but his Sakura Series seems to capture the imagination most. It was done in his studio on his return from Japan, where he watched the Sakura Festival at Ueno Park in Tokyo where there are often more than 1,000 cherry trees. There were many people with great expectations, some even picnicking. It was a mesmerising spring, the sakura blooms, but Suzlee interprets it as a great beauty of Nature – a hanami (viewing and smelling flowers) ritual, and a sign of life and vivacity. And the impermanence, how everything will evanesce, until next spring. The cherry blossoms spectacle are different all over Japan – January in Okinawa and peaking in late March or April in Honshu. Suzlee's works explore nuanced expressions and emotions through colours, composition, and technique. Est: RM7,000 - RM14,000

Suzlee Ibrahim graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1987 but started lecturing in his alma-mater from 1993 to 2009 (part-time 1993-1996), after a stint in advertising. Suzlee used a harmonious palette of blue and black hues to express his memories and feelings. Dynamic motion was produced through the exploration of mark making using spontaneous lines, gestures, and shapes. The relationship between textures and swift overlapping lines enhances the spatial depth of the image. Superstar Madonna put her thoughts and experiences into music in nearly 200 songs, and Suzlee Ibrahim was inspired by her songs to turn the rhythm, modulations and melody into his art series which he called Melody. So enamoured, Suzlee transformed the energy, character and auralscape of the Queen of Pop into a visual tribute drawing on his own abstract repertoire, and here in liberal doses of red with black markings all over. Music and Visual Art have been symbiotic, and the theory of synasthesia had impacted Klee and Kandinsky, and Kandinsky even wrote the groundbreaking Concerning The Spirituality in Art. This is the second time the Melody Series had come into HB auction, the first being Spirit Like The Fire (2009). Suzlee has a dedicated abstract journey, and his other series are Monsoon, Wetlands, Cenang, Poem, Summer, Pulau Pangkor, Sahara, Belantara, Batik, Ombak, Sakura, Movement, Space, Turquoise, Meditation, Waterfalls and Gestures. Artist-academician Suzlee Ibrahim is, without doubt, one of the most important abstract artists under 60 in Malaysia today, with 40 solos in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Macedonia, Taiwan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Hong Kong and Indonesia. He has never looked back since his first solo, Movement, at the Shah Alam Gallery in 1998, and he celebrated with a mini-retrospective called 30-Years Journey, at The Art People Gallery in July-September 2016. He holds the Malasyia Book of Records for the longest painting, for The Poem (2010-2015), measuring 5 feet x 60 feet. He is the dean of faculty of fine art at the National Academy of Arts and Culture (Aswara), Kuala Lumpur, after teaching at the Mara Institute of Technology for 16 years. His awards include the Tokoh Seni Anugerah Citra Kencana UKM (2011), the Japan-Malaysia Art Friendship Ambassador (2007), and the Emaar Art Symposium Outstanding Creative Excellence Award, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2005). He was also awarded 2nd Prize in the Monastir Festival in Tunisia in 2019 and the Zervas Art gold medal in the Paris Art Symposium in 2020.

        • Suzlee Ibrahim (b. 1967) Sakura Series - Red Sakura II, 2008
          Jun. 30, 2019

Suzlee Ibrahim (b. 1967) Sakura Series - Red Sakura II, 2008

          Est: RM30,000 - RM50,000

Suzlee Ibrahim has done several memorable series but his Sakura Series seems to capture the imagination most. It was done in his studio on his return from Japan, where he watched the Sakura Festival at Ueno Park in Tokyo where there are often more than 1,000 cherry trees. There were many people with great expectations, some even picnicking. It was a mesmerizing spring, the sakura blooms, but Suzlee interprets it as a great beauty of Nature - a hanami (viewing and smelling flowers) ritual, and a sign of life and vivacity. And the impermanence, how everything will evanesce, until next spring. The cherry blossoms spectacle are different all over Japan - January in Okinawa and peaking in late March or April in Honshu. Suzlee goes for a platter of blobs and splatters with dominant red against white and black streaks and stains, like a Pollockian drip. Suzlee Ibrahim has taught for 26 years, first at his alma mater Universiti ITM (graduated 1987) and then Aswara, and was awarded the Tokoh Seni Citra Kencana UKM in 2011 and the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang Aswara in 2010. He had also won the Japan-Malaysia Art Friendship Ambassador Award (2007) and the Emaar Art Symposium Outstanding Creative Excellence Award, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2005). He had solos in Denmark (Remise Academy, Brande) and Macedonia (Kicevo art colony), and in 2010, took part in the Tunisia Art Festival Workshop in Monastir. He had a glimpse survey exhibition at The Art People Gallery in Klang in 2016. He presented a body of works alongside Rafiee Ghani at Nou Gallery, Taipei’s leading gallery, from Nov 16 to Dec 16, 2018.

          Oct. 28, 2018

SUZLEE IBRAHIM (b. 1967) Melody Series: Spirit - Like The Fire, 2009

          Est: RM16,000 - RM28,000

In 31 years of active, serious painting, Suzlee Ibrahim is at the head of the queue in moving up the ranks of Malaysia's ermine abstractionists dominated by Abdul Latiff Mohidin, Yusof Ghani, Awang Damit Ahmad and Dato' Tajuddin Ismail. This was amply borne out in his ‘30 Years Journey' exhibition at The Art People Gallery in Klang, celebrating his 30th solo in 2016 (since his first, Movement 1 Series, at Galeri Shah Alam in 1998). As the name implies, the Melody Series resonates with musical strains of cheery lilts or sentimentality, depending on the mood at time of painting, intense or elegiac. His other series come with telling titles like Monsoon, Wetlands, Cenang, Poem or Summer – just to mention a few. It is a Long Way to Tipperary, so to speak, and Suzlee's string of awards, residencies, solos and workshops speak for itself. Just a few to mention — Awards: Tokoh Seni: Anugerah Citra Kencana (UKM, 2011); Juror's Award, Rasa Alam (UKM, 2012); Creative Excellence, Emaar Art Symposium (UAE, 2005); Excellent Service, Aswara (2010). Workshop: Tunisia Art Festival, Monastir (2010); Remise Academy, Brande, Denmark (2002). Art camp: Kicevo Art Colony, Macedonia. Not to mention his teaching dedication at the University Mara Institute of Technology, his alma mater, and Aswara. The Sotheby's Hong Kong April 2018 auction sale saw his work sold for HKD 237,500.

          Oct. 28, 2018

SUZLEE IBRAHIM (b. 1967) Monsoon Series Wave III, - 2010

          Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

The Monsoon Series captures Suzlee Ibrahim's childhood memories of the sea in Kuala Terengganu where he grew up. Located in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia, the city experiences a tropical monsoon climate with the heaviest rainfall at the end of each year. The artist witnessed the adversity of the kampung life with fishermen who faced difficulties to make ends meet during this time. His expressive gestures in the Monsoon Series are vigorous, imitating the violent seasonal climate. Layers upon layers of blue, red and white paint are applied with great force in broad and narrow brush strokes, resulting in an expressive work of art. Suzlee Ibrahim works in series which are easily identifiable by the place or subject. His other series in a 31-year painting career include Belantara, Batik, Ombak, Sakura, Melody, Movement, Sahara, Space, Summer, Turquoise, Monsoon, Meditation, Waterfalls and Gestures.
