La Plume had recognized and lauded Ibels' talent in their January 15, 1893 issue. A year later they bestowed further honor on him by commissioning him to design the poster for the first Salon des Cent. For his poster he employed a palette of five colors, softly gradated between green and brown. The image is composed of some of his favorite characters: a ballet dancer, a harlequin and a Pierrot, who is painting a picture of the ballerina. As with all of Ibels' work, it is an accomplished drawing of intense poetical elegance. "Remarkable in more than one way, this poster presents a resolutely modern composition and a framing which reveal the position of the ballerina in a depthless, indefinite space, as well as the perfect integration of the text to the image" (Salon des Cent p. 55). Ibels studied at the Academie Julian with Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard and became one of the original members of the Nabis, participating in all of their exhibitions. In 1894, he designed the first poster for the Salon des Cent, a year before he created this image, the largest he was to ever design. Jules Mévisto was a mime and a comedian who had a short-lived career performing fairly unpopular sketches in café concerts. Ibels had already portrayed the actor as a Pierrot in Entrée en Scene, a series of small format lithographs, before he set about creating this large poster for the actor's appearance at the Concert de La Scala. Against the bleak, nouvelle-urban setting of a busy factory with active chimneys, Ibels depicts the images of the actor, in profile, a sitting peasant, a soldier and a farmer toiling in the field. All of these characters were to be the subjects of the socially-critical act that Mévisto would deliver. Stylistically, Ibels' layout and outlining are very similar to Lautrec's, but his colors are less aggressive and his subdued melancholy lends his images a different mood. Thanks to both Ibels and Lautrec, as Charles Saunier noted in La Plume, the poster, which had only been considered as attractive wall decoration, was being elevated to the higher status of a satirical and sociological vision. The Théâtre Libre, founded by André Antoine, was a prominent Parisian theatre company between 1888 and 1893. It presented naturalism and was dedicated to producing plays in any and all genres that had not been produced before and often were considered too much of a risk to stage. The playbills and posters were designed by leading artists of the day with an un-glamorized, gritty realism that reflected the spirit of the theatre and its repertoire.

Ibels was one of the most prominent young artists in Paris in the 1890s. He studied at the Academie Julian with Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard and became one of the founding members of the Nabis, participating in all of their exhibitions. In 1891, his works were exhibited side-by-side with Toulouse-Lautrec's at the Salon des Independants, and the two became close friends. Like Toulouse-Lautrec, he loved the café-concerts and designed most of his posters for, or featuring, performers. In 1893, he collaborated with Toulouse-Lautrec on an album of lithographs entitled Le Café-Concert. Rather than become a painter, Ibels dedicated his art to the printed page, working for magazines, designing sheet music covers and theatrical programs. Within the Nabis, he was known as "The Nabis Journalist," because of his work for many of Paris' progressive journals and the founding of the short-lived periodical L'Escarmouche. Lithographs in colour, ca. 25 x 12 cm, wove paper 35,5 x 25,5 cm, all signed in the stone (occ. light foxing). - Ibels (Paris 1867-1936) made various posters for Jules Mévisto (Paris 1857-1918), a café-concert singer, pantomime actor and French chansonnier. One of the designs was used for the poster of his debut at the "Concert de l'Horloge" in 1891.

Eugène Verneau, Paris DESCRIPTION: This is the complete series of 8 lithographic programs Ibels accomplished for the 1892-93 season of Le Théâtre Libre. Images include dockworkers by a canal, coal-miners shoveling at a slag-heap, two sailor-ruffians at a bar, a regiment of soldiers marching to a bugler, ladies at the seashore, gentlemen reading papers at the café, a view of an opera from the balcony seats, and "a pair of female performers and a male wrestler on a raised platform with two soldiers strolling by" (Seurat, p. 97), which forms the program's title page: in other words, a cross-section of society, in the circus of modern life. This includes a hand-signed and dedicated cover, numbered 39 of an “edition avant lettre,” and includes all 8 prints before letters. (Art Nouveau; Theatre)

H.G. Ibels Belle ?poque Original Litho 1893 Signed From Le Caf? Concert is an original signed Litho, realized in 1893 by Henri-Gabriel Ibels. Black and white lithograph on paper. The print is from the portfolio Le Caf? Concert, a suite of lithographs on Japan paper by Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri-Gabriel Ibels, printed by Edward Ancourt & Cie and published in 1893 by l'Estampe Originale. In this portfolio, working with the artist Henri-Gabriel Ibels and the writer Georges Montorgueil, Lautrec created an ode to the caf?-concert. Montorgueil?s essay argued that caf?-concert are place for people from all walks of life to relax and communicate. This print represents a portrait of Polin French cabaret singer (''comique troupier'') and actor. Having become famous, he sang at the Caf? des Ambassadeurs and then, for twenty years, at La Scala, both in Paris. His most successful songs were recorded initially on the cylinders of the time, many of which were reissued more recently on CDs. Sign of the artist printed on lower right. Eugène Verneau, Paris DESCRIPTION: This lovely design for the very first exhibition of the Salon des Cent gracefully references three famous characters from Commedia dell’Arte. Pining with love, the ever-sad clown Pierrot paints the beautiful ballerina Columbine as Harlequin; the man with whom she will eventually run off peers over his shoulder. It is a moment filled with romantic promise even though we know that historically this does not end well for Pierrot. Cleverly, Ibels has placed his signature on Pierrot’s canvas, possibly alluding to the sympathy he has for the character. Many comparisons have been made between the work of Ibels and Toulouse-Laturec: they both are captivated by slice-of-life moments, especially those surrounding performers and other fringe members of society who are unafraid to showcase the ugly or grotesque.
