Finished just in time for the December opening, Love Group represents the best of Iannelli as a sculptor—an effortless conjuring of beauty through form. As an artist, Iannelli remained true to his fundamental principle, "Art is the sense of fitness." If understood to mean that true art is just a small part of a larger whole, Love Group is most assuredly the heart of his body of work and was, most certainly, the focal point of the exhibition. When it opened on December 22, 1925, Alfonso Iannelli Exhibition received rave reviews from critics, lauded as a more focused and mature iteration of his prior showings. One critic writing for the Chicago Evening Post even went so far as to remark, "All who look do not see. In a world where most things are taken for granted, it is only the exceptional individual who, through circumstances or innate gift, actually see values, relations, truths." The exhibition, organized and installed by Iannelli himself, occupied three large galleries at the museum, and ran for just under a month before travelling to the Minnesota State Fair and on to Madison, Wisconsin. Love Group remained in the collection of the artist until after his death. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Alfonso Iannelli (1888-1965) Floating (maquette) Park Ridge, Illinois, circa 1938 plaster marked "3G" on underside in paint 27"w x 7"d x 14"h Literature: Jameson, David, Alfonso Iannelli: Modern by Design, Top Five Books, 2013, p. 229 Catalog Note: Alfonso Iannelli was born in Andretta, Italy in 1888 but immigrated to the United States as a small child. He spent most of his life in Chicago, working with noteworthy architects, designers and artists. One of his most well-known contributions to Chicago architecture was through his collaboration with Frank Lloyd Wright to create sculptures for Midway Gardens. It was there that Iannelli felt he was able to achieve a fusion of sculpture with the geometric forms of architecture. He believed that "the movement of the sculpture must flow from the structure itself." Alongside his sculptures, Iannelli was a talented designer, producing hundreds of posters for the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles in the earlier years of his career. It is through these posters that we can see his style evolve towards more geometric figures and forms after working on Midway Gardens. In 1924, Iannelli visited Europe and was introduced to the modern figurative style of Fernand Léger, Oskar Schlemmer and the Bauhaus movement. This experience impacted Iannelli and by the 1930s his sculptures began to evolve into more simplified forms. This plaster maquette created for the sculpture Floating is an example of Iannelli's smoother, simplified representation of the figure.

ALFONSO IANNELLI (1888-1965). SASCHA PIATOV. Tempera, metallic ink & pencil showcard. Circa 1913. 38x28 inches, 97x72 cm.

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

ALFONSO IANNELLI (1888-1965) SASCHA PIATOV. Tempera, metallic ink & pencil showcard. Circa 1913. 38 1/2x28 1/2 inches, 97 3/4x72 1/2 cm. Condition A-: darkening in lower right text; text panel affixed at bottom; template windows cut out above text, as issued. Painted on board. Matted and framed. In his early 20s, Alfonso Iannelli began his artistic career designing the lobby windows for the Orpheum Theater in L.A. Impressed by his window illustrations, they commissioned him to paint lobby "showcards" to promote the different vaudeville acts that came through. These painted displays all had rectangular cut-outs that allowed the theater to adjust the photos of performers and show dates each time a new act arrived. Iannalli described these projects himself - "These were showcards when I first saw them, but it seemed to me this was a wholly proper field for an artist to solve quickly and the legitimate avenue for the best work of any artist." During this time, Iannelli received a sculptural commission from Frank Lloyd Wright to collaborate on the Midway Gardens in Chicago. In this image for Sascha Piatov, Iannelli playfully depicts the juggling clown, with 2-dimensional circles representing the balls, and rows of dots abstractly suggesting their movement around the space, positioned behind the graceful, sharply diagonal form of the ballerina. Sascha Piatov was a vaudeville performer, who debuted in "Roly Poly" on Broadway in 1912; he later created his own programs (like the one advertised in Iannelli's work), danced with the Ballet Russe and other famous companies, and taught dance classes in upstate New York. Iannelli p. 24.
