    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Charles Woodward Hutson (American/South Carolina, 1840-1936, active New Orleans, 1908-1936) , "The Neighbor's Barn", "The Neighbor's House" and "Splashing Water", 3 watercolors on paper, one pencil-monogrammed lower right, each with artist label with title en verso, each 7 in. x 10 in., unframed. (3 pcs.) Note: Charles Woodward Hutson followed an unusual path to artistic success and has defied art historical categorization. He has been described as a self-taught artist, an early modernist and a visionary. Hutson was born into a wealthy family in McPhersonville, South Carolina and studied to become a lawyer prior to serving in the Civil War. With few opportunities available for young lawyers following the war, Hutson became a professor of Greek, modern languages and history, working at universities in Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana. He was a prolific writer of scholarly books and articles on the same subjects. While teaching in Texas in 1905, Hutson began to sketch in pastel – the start of an endeavor that would define the last three decades of his life in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast. Hutson retired to New Orleans in 1908 at the age of sixty-seven and turned to art full time, focusing on watercolor and oil landscapes. His daughter, Ethel Hutson, was an artist and administrator at Newcomb College and attempted to teach her father formal artistic techniques. He rejected her attempts, believing that having no training would keep his mind open and fresh and remove pressure to succeed. A critic of the time referred to his work thus: “…he must be a young fellow because his work is a little immature, but particularly it is unusually modern.” Huston was eighty-five years old at the time. His works were subsequently shown throughout museums in the South and galleries in New York, and he was the subject of the first one-man exhibition at the Delgado Museum of Art (later New Orleans Museum of Art) in 1931 at the age of ninety-one. He continued to explore Southern landscape with “…the confidence of a well-cultured man and the ignorance of an amateur” until his death in 1936. Ref.: Gruber, J. Charles Woodward Hutson (South Carolina/Louisiana, 1840-1936) "Pattern of Pine Needles on Forest Floor", "Yellow Road Running by the Bay", "The Road on Back Bay, Biloxi" and "Plantation House" three pastels and a watercolor each initialed "C. H." lower right, three with labels identifying artist and title. Each matted, glazed and framed. 14" x 10" to 9" x 7", framed 21" x 16-3/4" to 16-1/2" x 13-1/4" Notes: A native of South Carolina, Charles Woodward Hutson initially followed in his father's footsteps and studied to be a lawyer. He gave up his legal career and taught Greek at Louisiana State University and other southern universities. Upon his retirement, Hudson moved to New Orleans and became an artist. Favoring pastels and watercolor, his lack of formal art education appears to have given him a sense of freedom in terms of style and approach. In 1931 at the age of 91, Hudson had a one-man show of his work at the Delgado Museum of Art (today NOMA). His work was included in Sidney Janis' landmark folk art book They Taught Themselves: American Primitive Painters of the 20th Century.
