    WILLEM HUSSEM (1900-1974)

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

‘Peinture VIII’, 1959. Oil on canvas. Signed with monogram and date, repeated on stretcher. Signature on verso. Provenance: collection Lies & Cees Soons Expo: Venice Biennale, 1960; Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 24.3-16.4.61, cat. no. 8 or 9 (of 16 works exhibited, as 'untitled'). The painting titled 'Peinture VIII' was produced during the Dutch artist's glory years. Throughout his career, his style evolved, culminating in a unique visual language close to expressive constructivism paired with geometric abstraction. Influenced by Vincent van Gogh, Hussem initially employed a figurative style that later on evolved into abstract painting. After a stay in Paris, Hussem returned to The Hague in 1936 where he remained afterwards. In this city he frequented the café ‘De Posthoorn’ where he met fellow painters but also several poets who encouraged hem to write poetry himself. Besides the Posthoorn group, Hussem was part of art movements such as ‘Fugare’ and ‘Liga Nieuw Beelden’. At that time, his oeuvre is situated within the art movement of the ‘New Hague School’. In the Netherlands, Hussem is considered a prominent figure in the cultural avant-garde from 1936-1974, but the decade of the 1960's were the most successful and artistically intersting within his oeuvre. 'Peinture VIII', dated 1960, is a rare artwork from this fascinating time. The painting is the result of a constant pursuit of simplicity and purity. Although his art is abstract, reality plays an important role in his artistic process. Through geometric shapes, he creates his own new reality. Colour and shape are inextricably linked in this process. Visible in the work is the influence of Kasimir Malevich, Nicolas de Staël and Oriental calligraphy. These spontaneous brush drawings help Hussem develop an abstract visual language. 'Peinture VIII' has a blotchy character typical of Hussem's paintings of this period. Description FR ‘Peinture VIII’, 1959.

In the 1950s, Hussem created paintings that appeared to emanate calligraphic characters, and in the late 1950s, more geometric influences could be seen. After 1965, this gradually changed into more clear-cut forms, which can be demonstrated in this work on offer. A constant aspiration towards simplicity and purity underlies not only this painting, but Hussem’s entire oeuvre. He once said, "I spent a lifetime trying to make my job so simple. I have to conquer that simplicity over and over again." Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request. Untitled (1953) Dated 1953 and numbered Nº 2 on the back of the frame Oil on board, 40.1 x 38.1 cm Provenance: - Galerie Nouvelles Images, The Hague - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: In artist's frame. Willem Hussem is a renowned Dutch painter and poet whose art, after the liberation, quickly changed when a new abstraction came into being: free and unregulated expression of personal feelings and fantasies. In his early years, Hussem mostly painted in a figurative style. In 1918, he moved from Rotterdam to Paris, where he met modern painters such as Georges Vantongerloo, Piet Mondriaan, and Pablo Picasso. In the mid-thirties, due to international tensions and the threat of the fascist regime in Germany, Hussem and his wife came back to the Netherlands and settled in The Hague. During the war, art primarily needed to be understandable: still lifes and landscapes, preferably depicted realistically. This radically changed after the war when artists arrived at spontaneous abstraction, each in their own way. Hussem embraced his new-found freedom by abandoning recognisable depictions. Calligraphy became a major inspirational source, which led him initially to all kinds of expressive forms and, later, to balanced compositions of lines, colours, and forms against a monochrome background, as can be seen from this work on offer.
