    3 Demo Paintings by W. Hurley, L. Sisson, & W. Acheff

    Est: $1,600 - $2,500

Three Paintings on Canvas Board by Wilson Hurley (American, 1924-2008), Laurence P. Sisson (American, 1928-2015) and William Acheff (American, b. 1947). Each signed at center. A beautiful trio of demo paintings by American artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries: mountain landscapes by Wilson Hurley and Laurence Sisson, and a still life by William Acheff. All are rendered realistically with a keen observation of light and skilled use of color. Size (all the same): 20" W x 16" H (50.8 cm x 40.6 cm) About Wilson Hurley: "Wilson Hurley was born in Tulsa and spent his early years in Virginia and New Mexico. The beauty of New Mexico and its art traditions led to his early interest in painting. Trained as a pilot at West Point and an early tour of duty in the Philippines encouraged the broad perspective that enriches his work. His extensive studies of history, art history and the sciences give his work a sense of reality that he has edited in the best tradition of representational art. The catalog of his work illustrates his wide-ranging interest in landscape, outer space, aerospace, as well as portraiture and still life and is an attempt to present a complete accounting of his work." (source: artist's website) About Laurence Sisson: "Thriving as an artist until his death at 87, Laurence Sisson maintained a rigorous daily work ethic that fueled his pursuit of artistic perfection, resulting in oils and watercolors that retained their energy and gained polish over his long career, leading to representation in approximately 18 American museums since the 1950s and early recognition with a Fortune magazine cover in 1951. Captivated by the ever-evolving beauty of ocean and desert landscapes, particularly Maine's rugged coast and the sparse forms of the Southwest, where he resided for over 36 years and found surprising similarities to his New England origins, Sisson continuously sought new ways to capture their aesthetic essence, developing a distinctive pebble technique for his coastal scenes and unique treatments for clouds in both regions, imbuing each painting with his 70 years of experience and a fresh, vibrant perspective on the landscapes he cherished." (summarized from the artist's website) About William Acheff: Born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1947 with diverse ancestry, William Acheff moved to Northern California at age five where his artistic interest grew in high school. Despite avoiding formal art education beyond that, a chance encounter with Italian artist Roberto Lupetti in 1969 led to professional training. Inspired by Taos, New Mexico in 1973, Acheff began his career painting Native American artifacts, gaining significant exposure after showing in Houston in 1979. His career flourished, marked by Prix de West Purchase Awards in 1989 and 2004, and two John J. Geraghty Awards. Influenced by Dutch still-life and American trompe l'oeil, Acheff, despite professing semi-retirement in 2017, continues his artistic exploration in Taos. • Wilson Hurley Sunset on Coast of Sabah Painting
    Jun. 08, 2024

Wilson Hurley Sunset on Coast of Sabah Painting

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Title is Mauve Sunset on the Coast of Sabah. Oil on canvas. 32" by 48" unframed, Framed Dimensions 40" by 56" PROVENANCE: National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Oklahoma City Gallery; Private collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, acquired from the above, 1993. The present work is included in the Wilson Hurley digital collections/online Catalogue Raisonne, listed as cat. no. 76-28. Wilson Hurley (1924 - 2008) was active/lived in New Mexico, Oklahoma. Wilson Hurley is known for Landscape, some western genre, mural painting. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he became a painter in luminist style of the American West, especially known for his depictions of Canyon de Chelly, Yellowstone Park, and the Grand Canyon. He attended high school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where his family moved in 1935. Knowing his interest and talent, his mother arranged for him to spend time as a teenager with artists Theodore Van Solen, Josef Bakos, and John Young-Hunter. Hurley studied engineering at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1945, and then served in the Air Force. He resigned his Air Force commission to go to law school at George Washington University in Washington DC and then practiced law in Albuquerque, New Mexico for fourteen years. In 1965, he became a full-time painter, an occupation interrupted by serving in the Vietnam War during 1968 and 1969. In 1972, Hurley became a member of the National Academy of Western Art, and in 1984, he was given the Prix de West Purchase Award by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Other exhibition venues include the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Rockwell Museum in Corning, New York; the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum; and the Gilcrease Museum. In 1991, he painted five large murals for the new addition of the Cowboy Hall of Fame, each celebrating the beauty of western landscapes of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, California, and Wyoming. He titled this series, "Windows of the West" because of the diversity of geographical locations and in his words, to "show a view of the world passed through another's mind" (Hagerty). Because of his growing reputation as a painter of western landscape, he was a judge in the inaugural 1987 Arts for the Parks exhibition. Among his own works are depictions of Yellowstone National Park, where he was especially fascinated by the cascades of the Yellowstone River. In 1996, he completed dioramas for the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. The 15 paintings each depict a sunset over an iconic American vista including the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park. They cover a total of 2876 square feet. In 2008, Wilson Hurley died of Lou Gehrig's Disease. "All one has to do is experience one of these sunsets to realize that anything is possible in nature with light. Of course, the camera can catch the actual wave lengths, but, as usual, we had no camera with us the instant the whole world turned lavender. The camera would show a bright purple, where the eye, saturated with color, mutes it and adds almost a fluorescence to the emerald green of the foliage. I wrote down what I saw in words and drew an ink sketch of the cumulus clouds on the South China Sea with their tips combed flat by an upper wind from the east. Sometime we want to go back to Borneo and see this again, if it happens again." - Wilson Hurley

Wilson Hurley (American, 1924-2008) Fog Strangler, 1971 oil on canvas signed Wilson Hurley and dated (lower left) 30 x 32 inches Property from an Estate, Sold to Benefit the Wichita Art Museum Provenance: The Baker Company, Lubbock, Texas, March, 1971 Acquired from the above by the present owner Perhaps the foremost painter of the skies of the American West, Wilson Hurley painted Fog Strangler in 1971, two years after winning the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in the Air Force in Vietnam, and a year after his marriage to his lifelong partner in art, Roz. It was while he was flying that Hurley fell in love with sky, clouds, light and shadow, and he made their interpretation on canvas into his signature theme. The "fog strangler" in Fog Strangler is the sun, breaking through the towering, billowing clouds that resemble fists withdrawing from a losing battle. Hurley loved, adhered to, and frequently bent the Renaissance rules of perspective and the impressionist discoveries regarding color. In Fog Strangler, the shadowed rocks in the foreground draw the eye to the brightest, distant light. The eye then moves to the light at upper left and down to the lighter patch below that. The effect makes the viewer feel the movement of the rainy front across the painting. -James D. Balestrieri
