      Mary Huntoon (1896-1970) Approach aka Bridge Approach Topeka 1937 The sand ground dry point etching with alternate technique in the sky area is from an edition of only 100 prints and signed in pencil by Mary Huntoon lower right with title lower left. The sky may have been achieved by the sand ground technique that Huntoon sometimes employed which creates an intaglio effect that lends tonal qualities not otherwise present with dry point, the result being akin to to that produced by the aquatint process. This image is umber 101 in the artist's catalog raisonne published by the Spencer Museum of Art. According to the Museum's comments on the print: 'Federal Art Project print. Sand ground or sandpaper ground is an uncommon intaglio technique in which an artist applies a ground to the plate and impresses it with sandpaper before placing the plate in an acid bath.       Mary Huntoon (1896-1970) Sand Dunes Corsica 12/30 1927 The rare, early pencil signed drypoint etching signed by the artist lower right is titled under the image on the lower left, just below the artist's signature in the plate, and numbered 12 from an edition of only 30 prints. An additional inscription designates the print as 2nd St (second state). It is estimated that a total of only 15 prints were actually pulled. Numerals in graphite to the right of the artist's pencil signature, now largely erased, appear to have included the date 1927. Mary Huntoon was a pioneer in the study of art therapy.
