    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

ANNA HYATT HUNTINGTON (AMERICAN, 1876-1973) BRONZE FIGURE OF A YAWNING TIGER, inscribed "ANNA V. HYATT" and stamped "GORHAM CO FOUNDERS Q492 #321", retaining excellent original patinated surface. Displayed on likely original black marble base. Circa 1920. 13 3/8" LOA (figure), 4 1/2" x 15 1/2" base. Catalogue Note: Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973) was one of the most important American sculptors of the 20th century. A promising young artist, Anna Hyatt studied privately with Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) before traveling to Paris, where she opened a studio of her own and began working on a large-scale model for an equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, which attracted a good bit of critical acclaim and led to her first major commission from the city of New York. Her iconic depiction of Joan of Arc in full armor, sword raised, with exquisite Gothic-style granite base remains an important visual landmark in Manhattan. In 1923, Anna Hyatt married Archer Huntington, a wealthy philanthropist and patron of the arts. In 1930, the couple purchased Brookgreen Plantation, a magnificent 10,000 acre parcel on the coast of South Carolina, where they began the process of extensively landscaping the grounds and installing a world-class collection of outdoor bronze sculpture, which comprised over 300 objects when finished, including examples by Anna Hyatt Huntington herself. The couple remained active in the arts and philanthropy throughout their lives and bequeathed much of their property to public institutions upon their passing. Particularly noted for her depiction of animals, Huntington was a prolific artist, who continued working on her art late in life. The present example, probably her most recognizable form, demonstrates the artist's skill at capturing the subject's paradoxical physical qualities of finesse and power in one sculptural moment.

Hyatt Huntington, Anna Vaughn (1876-1973) Bear Cub.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Hyatt Huntington, Anna Vaughn (1876-1973) Bear Cub. Modeled 1905, cast later. Bronze with brown patina with inscribed signature on base, "Anna V. Hyatt" stamped and numbered by the Gorham Foundry with the foundry mark Q4 and #129, 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 x 3 in. Hyatt Huntington was an extremely prolific and successful sculptor of public monuments famous for her work depicting animals in particular. "Anna Hyatt Huntington, one of the leading American sculptors of her generation, was active in her career for more than seventy of her ninety-eight years; at age ninety she completed her last equestrian statue. She worked in several mediums and created hundreds of works ranging from small bronzes to monumental equestrians. Although wild and domestic animals were Huntington's favorite subjects, she also modeled portrait busts and made vigorous studies of the human figure. Her general approach was based on and continued the French naturalistic tradition of Barye, Frémiet, and Falguière, and her works of art always reflected a keen observation of nature and revealed a mastery of technique." (Quoted from Myrna G. Eden's Energy and Individuality in the Art of Anna Huntington, Sculptor and Amy Beach, Composer, Scarecrow Press, 1987.)

Having a professor of zoology at Harvard as her father sparked her interest in animals at a young age. Following in the footsteps of her sister, who was also a sculptor, Huntington received formal training as an artist at the Art Students League of New York. She also spent a considerable amount of time at the local zoos in New York and circuses observing animals. Huntington's diligence combined with technical proficiency allowed her to become one of the most accomplished and internationally recognized female sculptors of her generation. She created numerous impressive figural sculptures, usually presented in a state of suspended animation with ample movement and a great attention to details that breathed life into them. Preferred subjects for Huntington include jaguars, tigers, lions, bears, elephants, horses, bulls and dogs. The Yawning / Stretching Tiger is one of her most widely recognized works, with 359 known variations cast by Gorham Mfg. Co. between 1917 and 1948. Though small in scale, the bronze sculpture looks very much alive in its facial expression and exudes energy throughout its slender yet strong body. A similar sculpture may be found in the collection of National Museum of Women in the Arts (cast circa 1917) in Washington, DC. A larger-scale example of this form may be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Art (cast circa 1917) in Washington, DC and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City (cast circa 1920).
