Clementine Hunter Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1886 - d. 1988

Born to Mary Adams, a descendant of Virginian slaves, and Janvier Rueben, who was of Irish and Native American heritage, Louisiana folk artist Clementine Hunter spent most of her early life on plantations. Clementine Hunter's prints were vivid replications of her abstract oil paintings, created from memories of her time on southern plantations. Religious scenes, recreation, portraiture, and nature scenes from Melrose Plantation were all subjects of Clementine Hunter's prints. 

Marie Therese, a freed Congo native, founded Melrose Plantation in the 1790s, and it became an artists' colony during the time Hunter lived there. Clementine Hunter's paintings for sale are more valuable and sought after because of her unofficial title of most famous female artist of Louisiana. Though she first exhibited in 1949, Hunter did not garner public attention until the 1970s when both the Museum of American Folk Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibited her paintings. Note: Born near the end of 1886 on the notorious Hidden Hill Plantation in Marco, Louisiana, Hunter moved to nearby Melrose Plantation in 1902 and worked in a variety of positions from cotton picker to housekeeper and cook. The plantation was owned by John and Cammie Henry and later, after the death of John, Mrs. Henry retained the property and continued to plant, sell crops and maintain the grounds. Melrose thrived under her care, and Mrs. Henry became known for her dedication to the arts and for her collection of historic and culturally significant items. She often hosted social gatherings for artists and writers, and Clementine Hunter, at the time a cook at Melrose, came across leftover paints and found inspiration to create her first paintings in the late 1930s or early 1940s. During this same period, François Mignon arrived at Melrose Plantation for a six-week visit that turned into a three decade long stay. He became the plantation's historian and befriended Clementine Hunter. With both Mignon and Henry encouraging Hunter to paint, she became committed to her art, creating not only beautiful small-scale paintings on canvas and board, but also large-scale murals which decorated the structures on the property. Hunter’s compositions reflected daily life at Melrose, and in her thick brushstrokes and strong primary colors, she documented the lively scenes that surrounded her from the labor-intensive cotton harvesting and pecan picking to the leisurely pursuits of Saturday nights at the juke joint. Hunter’s unique style and vision captured an integral part of southern history, and she was well-recognized in her lifetime for her artistic achievements with many exhibitions. Like so many artists, she had an intense desire to create, and her subsequent oeuvre is one that continues to receive global recognition and accolades to this day. Ref.: Gilley, Shelby R.               Clementine Hunter (American, 1887-1987) Nativity Scene oil on board initialed CH (lower right) 9 x 12 inches. This lot is located in Chicago. This painting has been authenticated from photographs by Hunter expert Tom Whitehead. Lot note: Self-taught artist Clementine Hunter was born in 1887 on the Hidden Hill Plantation in rural Louisiana, where her grandparents had been slaves. At the age of twelve, she moved with her family to Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches Parish, where they worked as sharecroppers. In addition to laboring as a field hand, Clementine worked as a cook and housekeeper for the former plantation, which had been turned into a retreat for visiting artists. Inspired by the left-behind artists' paint and brushes, she began to make art in her 50s. In Hunter’s paintings, she depicts everyday life of the black families and workers on the plantation, with figures picking cotton and pecans, or celebrating at weddings and baptisms. Additionally, she often painted Biblical scenes, such as the present artwork, Nativity Scene. As noted by Tom Whitehead, the preeminent scholar on the artist, Hunter had no comprehension of what the Middle East looked like, so she painted Mary and Baby Jesus under a banana tree, the best source of shade at Melrose Plantation. Only two Wise Men are included in the composition, as the artist ran out of space on the board, and these two figures present a pineapple, a holiday treat at Melrose, and a cake covered with cellophane. It is details such as these that makes Hunter’s naïve work so strikingly charming A 1953 article in Look magazine drew national attention to the artist. Three years later, the Delgado Museum (now the New Orleans Museum of Art) organized a solo exhibition for Hunter, the first for an African-American artist by a Louisiana museum - even though the segregation laws at the time prohibited Hunter from entering the exhibition space during public viewing hours. Radcliffe College included Hunter in its Black Women Oral History Project, published in 1980. Northwestern State University of Louisiana granted her an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 1986. Her artworks are found in many public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the American Folk Art Museum, New York, and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Hunter has been the subject of biographies and artist studies, and inspired other works of art. In 2013, composer Robert Wilson presented a new opera about her life, titled Zinnias: the Life of Clementine Hunter, at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

When she was twelve, her family moved to Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches Parish to work as sharecroppers. Clementine worked as a field hand, cook, and housekeeper. Melrose Plantation was made into a retreat for visiting artists; Hunter took up painting an artist's left-behind paint and brushes in her fifties. She painted everyday images of the activities of the Black families and workers, and made pictorial quilts. A 1953 article in Look magazine drew her national attention. Three years later, the Delgado Museum (now the New Orleans Museum of Art) organized a solo exhibition for Hunter, the first for an African-American artist by a Louisiana museum - even though the segregation laws at the time prohibited Hunter from entering the exhibition space during public viewing hours. Hunter's artworks today are found in many public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the American Folk Art Museum, New York and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.
