      William Morris Hunt

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

(American, 1824 - 1879)  Study for The Flight of Night, signed lower left "WM Hunt", oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in.; possibly original period carved wood frame, 27 x 31-1/4 in. Provenance: Collection of Barbara Novak, New York Note:  The Flight of Night features in one of the most enigmatic stories in nineteenth century painting.  Hunt's planned large scale mural for the New York State Capitol was a landmark in mural painting, but was sadly plagued by tragedy, and we can now only know it from drawings and oil studies such as this one. Although completed in 1879, the artist perished not long after, and  the mural itself was destroyed ten years after completion. It has fascinated art historians ever since. • William Morris Hunt, Maj. Chas. Jarvis of Vermont
      Oct. 04, 2022

William Morris Hunt, Maj. Chas. Jarvis of Vermont

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Attributed to William Morris Hunt according to family, late 19th century oil on canvas depicting Major Charles Jarvis of Vermont, standing with arms crossed before a gray background, signed with "WMH" monogram l.r., label verso from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 27" x 40 1/4" canvas. Major Charles Jarvis was born in Weathersfield, August 21, 1821. At the age of nine years, he was placed under the tuition of Solomon Foote at Castleton, Vt., and afterwards attended Exeter Academy. He was a student of Vermont University at the age of fourteen years, being the youngest member of his class. Graduating in 1839 he began the study of law in the offices Leverett Saltonstall and Judge Ward of Salem, Mass., but relinquished his studies and returned to Weathersfield on account of the death of his only brother, William. From this time he devoted himself to his parents, relieving his aged father from the weight and care of business, and settled his estate after his death. Feeling it his duty to devote himself to the service of his country, he raised a company for the Ninth Vermont Regiment in March, 1862, and he was chosen captain. The regiment was captured at Harpers Ferry and paroled in the strictest manner and ordered to Fort Douglas, Chicago. On account of the absence of his superior officers the command of the camp devolved on Captain Jarvis. In June, 1863, the regiment was ordered to Yorktown, Va., and Captain (now Major) Jarvis received a furlough and returned home. He was soon ordered to Boston Harbor to take charge of the Vermont conscripts, but rejoined his regiment at Yorktown early in October, 1863. The regiment removed to New Berne, N.C., and subsequently to Newport Barracks, N.C., and on December 1, 1863, while on an expedition Major Jarvis was mortally wounded. Major Jarvis was never married.

    • HURDY GURDY BOY PRINT AFTER WILLIAM MORRIS HUNT
      Jan. 22, 2022

HURDY GURDY BOY PRINT AFTER WILLIAM MORRIS HUNT

      Est: $100 - $150

A color lithograph print after the original painting titled The Hurdy Gurdy Boy by William Morris Hunt. Framed with mount. William Morris Hunt (American, 1824-1879) studied with Thomas Couture in Paris and then in Barbizon with Jean-François Millet, one of the leaders of the Barbizon school of painters. Upon returning to New England, Hunt introduced the works of Camille Corot, Théodore Rousseau, and the Barbizon school to the Boston society circles in which he moved, thereby helping to turn a rising generation of American painters toward Paris and away from the national style epitomized by the Hudson River school landscape painters. This original lithograph is after the 1851 Hunt painting currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Although Hunt was an early American practitioner of lithography, his original prints are quite scarce and this print is one of his rarest.

WILLIAM MORRIS HUNT (American, 1824-1879) A SLEEPY CAT charcoal on paper signed, l.l 8 1/2 x 12 in. Provenance: Henrietta M. ("Rita") & Peter N. Heydon, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other Notes: The Rita & Peter Heydon Collection of Cat Paintings represents the culmination of four decades of passionate collecting by two lovers of felines. The Heydons adopted their first cat, a barn stray named "Marmalade," shortly before they married in 1968. Over their 47 year marriage, they adopted nearly one hundred cats, giving each a distinctive food name (Capuccino, Meatloaf, Mushroom, and Gravy, to name a few). Furthermore, Rita dedicated much of her life to the adoption of stray, abandoned, or unwanted felines through the Heydon's private charity, The Mosaic Feline Refuge. In 27 years of operation, the Refuge found adoptive homes for more than 3,000 cats. In 1979, the Heydons purchased their first feline oil painting from The Graham Gallery in New York. Over four decades, they continued their collecting of delightful and whimsical cat paintings during their travels to New York, England, and France. Their genuine affection for these felines is evident in their heartfelt and personal collection, and Peter hopes that buyers recognize not only the charm of the felines depicted in these paintings but also the aesthetic energy and creativity that so many of the artists brought to their subjects.

William Morris Hunt (American, 1824-1879), Two Oval Bas Relief Portrait Plaques: Thomas Couture, 1848 and Profile of a Woman in a Ruffl

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

William Morris Hunt (American, 1824-1879) Two Oval Bas Relief Portrait Plaques: Thomas Couture, 1848 and Profile of a Woman in a Ruffled Cap, Thought to be Jane Maria Leavitt Hunt, 1841 Both monogrammed "WMH" and dated in the bronze, Couture titled l.c., Leavitt stamped "THE HENRY-BONNARD BRONZE CO../FOUNDERS. N-Y. 1898." l.r., incised "Jemima Leavitt/Married Jan. 1st, 1800" on the reverse. Bronze with brown patina, oval format, sizes to 10 3/8 x 7 5/8 in. (26.3 x 19.5 cm), with applied hanging rings. Condition: Dust and dirt to the interstices, Couture with minor wear to the patina. Provenance: By descent within the artist's family. N.B. The female portrait is thought by the family to be Jane Maria Leavitt Hunt (1801-1877), the artist's mother, although the incised notation on the reverse, scratched into the bronze in a later hand, names the sitter as "Jemima Leavitt/Married Jan. 1st, 1800." Jemima Loomis Leavitt (d. 1846) was the artist's maternal grandmother, and a marriage date of 1800 would seem likely, given that Jane, her oldest child, was born in 1801. The male portrait is the painter Thomas Couture, with whom William Morris Hunt studied in Paris from 1846 to 1852.
