Richard Howard Hunt is an American artist and sculptor. In the second half of the 20th century, he became the foremost African American abstract sculptor and artist of public sculpture. He was the first African American sculptor to have a retrospective at Museum of Modern Art in 1971. Hunt has created over 160 public sculpture commissions in prominent locations in 24 states across the United States, more than any other sculptor. Est: $10,000 - $20,000

Richard Howard Hunt (American, b. 1935) Untitled Abstraction, 1966 steel, wood (base) etched signature and date at lower area of sculpture 20"h x 19"w x 15"d Catalog Note: In the 1960s, Richard Hunt worked like many artists starting out, always on the lookout for inexpensive materials. With his focus zeroing in on metal sculpture, inspiration in scrap metal heaps and junkyards always yielded results. Chromed car bumpers were abundant and could be manipulated in a myriad of styles and ways. Formally an abstractionist, Hunt at the same time referenced the natural world. This moderately sized pedestal work looks very much like a stylized smirking cartoon head or an elephant head with a swaying trunk. Visual remnants of car bumper peek out among the abstract bends and folds of urban metal. Grinding marks and a warm, soft rust create an unusual patina for this rare, early sculpture. It is a very active yet formal work indeed. Richard Hunt studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His interest with surrealism early on morphed into an experimental style of assemblage through the sculpture of found metals, machine parts and car bumpers into non-representational forms. His sculptures consist of organic and industrial materials. He is well known for his sculptures, both small and large, along with permanent public installations, but he also produces abstract lithographs whose styles echo his sculptural forms. Hunt's work has been exhibited 12 times at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, including a major solo retrospective in 1971. He has public sculptures installed all over the country, including many major monuments to heroic figures in American history.
