E.A. (Eugene) Hunt, serigraph, Sea Lion Rock 2001

          Est: $250 - $350

Serigraph "Sea Lion Rock" II A/P 2001. Eugene Hunt is Kwakwaka'wakw from Tsaxis (Fort Rupert), BC Canada. Born in Alert Bay, B.C. in 1946 to Chief Thomas Hunt and Emma Hunt, he was a member of the Fort Rupert Band of the Kwagiulth people. In the early 1960's Eugene spent about four years carving at Thunderbird Park, Royal B.C. Museum, in Victoria. He left his art for the next 25 years, during which he worked as a commercial fisherman. In 1987 Eugene resumed carving, and during this time he also took up painting. During those later years he has worked with Calvin Hunt, George Hunt Jr. and John Livingston. He passed away in 2002. “Sea lions are common creatures along the west coast, and they are often found gathered on small rock islands. West coast peoples traditionally used sea lion wiskers for Klasila headpieces. Both the cormorant and the whales depicted in the print are crest figures. This design, which was originally painted on a drum, continues Eugene's fascination with the blending of traditional KwaGulth art and the graphic landscape style.”
